The Pumpkin Patch
19/09/2007 08:09 pmIt's been a crisp and crunchy sunny spring day. Such a pity that Izzie spent most of it in house elf slavery until 3pm. But there was still enough sunshine left for another three hours - time to sniff the orange blossoms, slink among the weeds and toss a few bales of straw around
Noticed that several of the strings hanging from the macadamia tree now have flowers on them. All fingers and toes are crossed for a harvest of nuts this year. It will be the first one ever if it is
But the Iz now has other evil schemes on her mind while slinking and lurking
It was the ma's birthday yesterday so popped over with a big apple strudel, a hamper of other goodies including silverbeet, spinach and sunflowers from the Lair but most importantly of all - a bunch of bottlies
There was lots of gobbling and munching - pumpkin soup followed by roast potatoes and pumpkins and then lounging by the fire looking at the cutest and quirkiest program on TV about giant pumpkin growers in the USA. Lords of the Gourd
There were some dubious potions and lotions being sprayed on some of these critters but it was just so so amazing. The seriousness of the competitors was quite breathtaking - only outdone by the size of their monsters. Quite interesting how many folks referred to these beauties as their 'babies'
There's just something so sort of endearing and innocent about such activities. Now Izzie wants to play pumpkin too!. Will start with the boring common garden varieties since it seems the seeds they use are pretty special and very expensive. Certainly not for newbies.
Meanwhile, the banksias are blooming. After the latest additions, our little patch now has ten varieties. Local Oz plants are seriously strange. So so suitable for an eccentric serpent
Forgot to mention, the Iz has signed up for a sustainability survey of 200 households in the local area. Apart from getting freebies like those new light bulbs plus useful advice and information, the ritual includes an 'energy audit' in October this year. Now if there ever was an incentive to get the Lair looking half civilized and decluttered, well this is it.
