izmeina: (circle serpent)

At the beginning of the year I made a few attempts at New Year's Resolutions. I am not really into doing the NY resolution thing since I prefer to be a slow and steady plodder relying on habit rather than motivation to get stuff done. But I did think that a clean slate would be the perfect opportunity to develop some better bed time habits. So basically I set out to be curled up in the serpent sack by 11pm each evening. Now I have to cackle evilly. Be careful what you wish for. I did slowly and steadily drag myself away from the Big Mac, Twitter and an assortment of online distractions but before long I would not even have to try.

For the last 2 months. it has been no effort at all to be in bed by 11pm. These days I barely get to 8pm before I have to hit the hay. I do set the alarm clock for 10pm so I can listen to Late Night Live. (Of course all these programs are now available any time as podcasts but as I have discovered long ago, any time is more likely to be not at all)

The problem is that 8pm to 10pm used to be my online time. The last time I darkened the door of this room with the Big Mac was 2 weeks ago and that was because I had so much catching up to do on admin and stuff and could not delay it anymore. The next big admin project will be my tax return. These days it takes about 10 minutes but it is just the thought of doing it that induces procrastination. I figured, I cannot let the month go by without managing at least 1 entry for the 30th. Otherwise I would be already in bed by now.

After a dozen spinning beachballs and taking 10 minutes just to get to this and assorted other web pages, it is likely going to be another 2 weeks before I bother with this particular Portkey again. There is something about dealing with screens that is much more tiring and frustrating than doing a decent day's work in the garden or even assorted boring house work chores.

I did plant 8 weeds on the verge yesterday. It is soon coming up to the end of the planting season so I am making the most of it. Also the orange tree is covered in tiny little blossoms and any day now they will bloom and I will spend every opportunity possible to lurk in their presence and get intoxicated by their magnificent fragrance. The everlastings and grevilleas are also just starting to flower. Not in their full glory yet because we have had a lot of grey rainy days. But any day now they will be putting on a show.

Exactly 2 weeks ago the surgeon rang me to ask if I had any questions about the operation but since then I have heard nothing at all from the hospital. The letter I got in the first week of August said that I was on the priority 1 wait list which means my case is seen as urgent and they gave me a waiting time of 30 days. Those 30 days will be up on Friday and still no sign of any date. Maybe the hospital is also on Plumber Time. I did see a story in today's paper saying that the major hospitals have been ordered to clear the decks in order to create capacity for a Covid surge since it is only a matter of time before the virulent Delta strain hits the wild west like it has the rest of the country. Being so isolated can only keep up safe for so long and any day now our luck will run out.

I've been following all the drama in Afghanistan. Aside from wondering what sort of explosives a suicide bomber has that could kill 170 people since I don't think that even that warehouse full of fertilizer in Beirut has such a high casualty rate, the other thing I kept thinking about was the 13 US Soldiers who were killed by the bomb. It is bad enough to be killed or injured in any war but for it to happen just days before the end of your tour of duty is just tragedy on steroids. It reminds me of the soldiers killed in the trenches of World War 1 the days just before Armistice Day. It makes their deaths look particularly futile. It turns out that there are a surprising number of men with Taliban attitudes lurking around the streets of Dursleyville. For some reason, I keep bumping into these bastards a lot lately.

Apparently hostilities have been declared between Auntie ABC and the Murdoch mob especially over tonight's episode of 4 Corners spilling the beans on FUX NEWS in USA. The creeps want to create an Oz equivalent as if we haven't already got enough murdochs running the joint. I am sure sQomo would be only too happy to do deals with these devils. The gossip is probably already all over Twitter by now. But I will save that for the little Tweet Stone. Now it's time to call it quits. I am way way past my 8pm bedtime. The joys of getting old.
