How I learned to love the Bomb
The serpent has signed up for an online course about nuclear terrorism. Sometimes there are actual assignments and this week one of them was due
Your mission if you should choose to accept is as follows
Pick one terrorist group and describe what its goals are. Does this group pose the greatest threat for engaging in nuclear terrorism? Why do you think so?
Draw on the terrorism background, historical cases, and and contemporary cases discussed by Dr. Allison, Dr. Crenshaw, Dr. Perry and the students, as well as the recommended readings. Outside sources are welcome. Write a persuasive paragraph reflecting your views. Read for conciseness, clarity of thought, and form.
Of course the serpent just could not resist a certain temptation. Too golden and too juicy
The Republican Party of the United States
The Republican Party under the leadership of Donald Trump is hell bent on provoking nuclear war on at least two fronts - with North Korea or Iran
North Korea is a clear and present danger. Another state where the unaccountable leader has reason to believe that they will be attacked by the USA as witnessed by a recent address to the United Nations from Donald Trump
“The US has great strength and patience. If it is forced to defend ourselves or our allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea.”
Donald Trump claims that the US has missile capabilities that can knock out an enemy missile 97% of the time. This means he is more likely to initiate a first strike in the mistaken belief that an enemy cannot retaliate
By threatening to tear up an arms treaty with Iran that took many years of negotiation, this creates the risk of adding yet another unstable regime to the many who already possess nuclear weapons
Donald Trump has recently expressed the desire to increase US nuclear missile stocks from the present 4,000 or so to the 32,000 or so maintained at the height of the Cold War (July 2017) in spite of the fact that compliance with this demand would lead to breaking an array of weapons treaties and triggering a global nuclear arms race
He has been known to ask what the point is of having nuclear weapons if you cannot use them.
As well as having access to a large arsenal of nuclear weapons and the ability to use them, he also has the incentive to use them in order to provide a distraction from present threats of criminal investigation
Of all the terrorist groups that possess access to nuclear weapons, the ability and the desire to use them, this is the group that ticks all of the boxes exacerbated by a significant sector of Evangelical "Christians" who believe that their leader is an instrument of The Lord and specially chosen by God to bring about the Rapture and the End of Days
The peer feedback on this one will be most amusing indeed.
