izmeina: a snippet of Escher's circle of serpents (goblinsnake)
Ickle Izzie is enjoying her last day of freedom before re-entering her last semester of servitude to the Goblins.
Izzie handed over the last of those hard earned silver sickles today to keep the goblins happy - or rather that we have until 5pm on Friday to pay our fees if we want to get the 25% discount. And what self respecting bean counting goblin can resist a discount? Mind you - many of the other house elves at the Izzie day job are also students and find it simply amazing that the Iz manages to pay upfront. They all defer their payments. They are too busy maxing the plastic or funding their gas guzzling urban assault vehicles, nightclubbing or buying boxes of coffin nails.

Izzie has also found herself a new source of scrooge amusement. A cafe around the corner from the Zoo and other Izzie haunts has introduced a daily puzzle for the customers. Anyone who gets the right answer gets a free coffee. So far the Iz has scored four free coffees out of five visits.
Sundays's puzzle was to fill in the missing numbers in the sequence
31,62, ?
25,56,?
19
And today's was "What was the largest ocean in the world before Bilbao? (Iz has forgotten the name) discovered the Pacific Ocean?"

After 6 weeks of possessing the Precioussss which Iz got from the library within ten minutes of her last exam in June, Iz finally returned it today as it was due back and had not read a single page. So in spite of the best of intentions - Iz has still only got as far as Aragorn and the Summoning of the Dead. Izzie is rather looking forward to meeting the original Denethor who is apparently a rather more complex character than portrayed in the Rings films.

So today it was time to return the Ring things and take out a copy of "Ethics in Business" by some Richard T de George. It looks interesting actually. It starts with the Tylenol poisonings and the most unusual reaction of Johnson and Johnson to these tragic events. Yesss. Turns out that this latest edition is from back in 1995 or so or else it would have been more than likely to mention Enron in the first few pages.
But the big question that Izzie still intends to find out is the ethics of those nasty stinking greedy goblins in charging Law prices for a unit that is not run by the School of Law. Hypocritical bastards.

Lots of extremely interesting things have been happening in the Izzie day job - stuff that Iz was supposed to post about long before now. Dolores had a staff meeting today and has decided to honour the inner goblin - which in plain English means chop chop chop.
It was such a sense of deja vu. Last time Iz was at one of those sorts of meetings, while most of the rest of the elves were all in a panicky tizzy, the Iz was not the least bit perturbed. In spite of the recent flakiness and irritability, Iz was as equally unfazed as last time. But is very very upset about one thing.
The new changes will involve major chopping of the evening shifts from two shifts of 5.5 hours and two of 6.5 hours down to two of 5.5 and two of only four hours.
Izzie's favorite co-worker who she calls the Prince of Darkness works five evenings of 6.5 hours a week and will probably not put up with such rubbish since he can easily get all the hours he wants working for agencies or playing an extra evening a week in his band. Not only does he like doing shows and stuff but he earns about three times more per night than when he is wearing his house elf hat.
We will be working together tomorrow evening so will be most interesting to see if he decides to leave. They are forgetting that they need folks like him far far more than he needs them. He is a fun and fair person and gets on well with most of the other elves and most of the residents - especially the women utterly adore him. Folks like that are so so hard to find that only a really stupid and incompetent manager would ever let them go for the sake of saving a few silver sickles. Stupid damned bean counters.
So it seems that in two weeks time they will bring in this new roster. Dearest Dolores might be in for a bit of a surprise to find a whole bunch of rats leaving the ship, especially as the new buildings are supposed to be finished some time in November.
Izzie is so so lucky that she has such low living expenses compared to most folks. Not having a car or a credit card to service makes life infinitely simpler and cheaper.
I guess I can drop from the present 55-58 hours a fortnight down to 50 and still get by but anything less than that and it will be time to go sniffing around for something new. But bad Iz has been procrastinating and still has not finished that resume that was supposed to have been all done four weeks ago.

Tomorrow at 8.30am is the first goblin lecture of this semester - the new and nasty revamped version of Managerial Accounting 301. Lucky the Iz has only two units this term compared to the usual 3 as this subject has acquired rather a bad reputation. Hopefully will also find time to tell the tale of the interesting adventures of the resident poltergeist at work who finally got her marching orders.
