Serpents and penguins

Once again Izzie rarely slinks much in Cyberia lately.
When not concentrating on keeping the Lair chaos and clutter free, then I'm busy being a culture vulture bingeing on an assortment of freak shows.
Yes. It's Fringe Festival time again.
On Tuesday I pigged out and saw 2 shows. The second one was a burlesque tribute to Tim Burton featuring an assortment of creatures.
The corpse bride, Jack Skellington and a very scary skinny Alice.
I had no idea that Mr Burton had anything to do with Batman. But the Joker turned up and proceeded to cause all sorts of chaos and mayhem.
Especially putting on clothes instead of taking them off. It was supposed to be a burlesque show after all.
But of course, the whole thing was a devious BOOBY trap. Quite literally.
I've clocked up 6 shows in one week but won't be going to my next one until Saturday.
"A Night at the Opera" a tribute show to Queen. But because it's at a gay night club, not quite sure if it's boylesque rather than burlesque.
Today I did something completely different and visited a gorgeous place called Penguin Island. Problem is, there never seems to be any penguins there. Unless they are all wearing invisibility suits.
But there are 2 very big pelican nesting grounds which are amazing.
They really should rename the place Pelican Island.
You need to make quite an effort not to see them.
At least that way, most people can see so many amazing critters without feeling cheated that they didn't see any penguins.
I especially liked how I didn't even have to go looking for bobtail lizards. They came slinking to me. Probably because I had dropped some crumbs when eating my baguette and the little critters were hoping for a bit of free lunch.
Unfortunately it was a bit too windy to go to some of the wildest bits of the island. But I'll definitely get there earlier next time and will bring binoculars so I can get a better view of the pelicans nesting.
Tomorrow I will be planting a bunch of leaf babies for the local birds.
No pelicans but lots of parrots.

Date: 2024-01-27 03:15 pm (UTC)That's exactly where they are but the local council is more than a bit sneaky about it
When my sister was here, Penguin Island was the number 1 item on her bucket list.
She had read about it in Lonely Planet.
We made a point of getting the ferry so we could be there for one of the scheduled feeding times.
But it turned out that refered to the "Discovery Centre" on the island which is a sort of Day Care / Senior Centre for penguins too young or too old to go out on the fishing day shift.
This centre apparently closed down about a year ago but Rockingham Council apparently never got the memo.
They still have it features in their tourism brochures.
I told one of the workers at the Tourist Info that they should rename it Pelican Island instead of creating false expectations for visitors.
All the adorable pelicans, other bird life and bobtail lizards play second fiddle to the huge disappointment of no penguins.
January and February are supposed to be moulting season when the penguins are most likely to be our at sea.
And yes. They are the Fairy penguins.
PS It wasn't a particularly bug deal for me not seeing the penguins since I am a Zoo friend and the fairy penguins live just around the corner from the snakes.
The signs on the island saying the Discovery Centre is closed also said that the penguins resident at the centre were moved to the zoo.
I will definitely go back because it's such a gorgeous magical place. But next time I will bring binoculars to watch the pelicans in their giant nesting grounds

Date: 2024-01-26 07:24 pm (UTC)Funny, I was never interested in penguins until getting into Linux and learning that penguin is a Linux mascot. Now I find them very cute. But there's not a lot of opportunities to observe them IRL. Last time I saw penguins in a bar in Tokyo. It was disappointing, though; there were just 3 penguins and they were behind the glass wall, although I don't know what I was expecting, it's not possible to interact with penguins like with cats, snakes and other creatures in the themed animal cafes.

Date: 2024-01-30 01:37 pm (UTC)Last week I went to see a wonderful Burlesque tribute to Tim Burton. I think you would have liked it too
The poor old Big Mac only gets to see dust bunnies these days.
It turns out that some of the fairy penguins from the now closed "Discovery Centre" on the island now live at the zoo
Fairy / Little penguins are by far the shortest of the little critters.
I find it appalling that they'd ever get stuck in sleazy smoky bars for puny humans to gawk at them.
Penguins keep popping up in
Duolingo. But only in the German version. It's like they are gloating.
That reminds me - the Duo app on iPhone 8 is just awful.
Spanish language has the bonus points option of writing a few sentences at the end of a story but when I do it on the iPhone I cannot even see what I am writing and it's almost impossible to move the cursor to correct typos. (I can see only at the end not while actually writing)
I'm now at the gorgeous gardens of the Fringe Festival sipping a glass of Semillon Sauvignon Blanc.
It's almost like the Lotto life!
