A Parade of Naked Emperors
22/04/2023 10:00 pmIt's been a while since I have posted anything from my all time favorite cartoonist. Generally because so much of his stuff recently has been about local politics which requires too much explaining for anyone overseas.
But this one reminds me of the Golden Age for political cartoonists when they had Trump, Bojo, Bolsonsaro and Trump to play with.
I am still peeved that FUX settled the Dominion libel case. The court case would have been worthy of its own television series.
As always with David Rowe, the Devil is in the details.

The lady's not for turning
25/07/2022 10:00 pmI have been half following the Love Island/ Squid Games drama of Number 10 Downing Street.
Quite amusing. Rather long and drawn out compared to the Oz Nights of the Long Knives.
What on earth are the cartoonists going to do without Bojo?
So it's now down to Lynne Truss and Rishi Sunak. I think Mr Sunak's dodgy tax dealings and assorted green card dramas could go against him but then again he looks squeaky clean compared to the dodginess of Boris. Being economical with the truth concerning one's taxes is probably seen not as a bug but a feature for most Tories.
Same with perceived conflicts of interest.
This time last week they were all sweltering in Brexitland. I never imagined I would see bushfires in Britain or the temperature getting to 40 celsius. Craziest thing is that some time in the future, this may be seen as the Good Old Days when they had only ONE 40 degree day instead of 10 of them.
I guess by then there will no longer be any queues at Dover because France will be even hotter than England.
Maggie rides again.

Poll Dancers
20/05/2022 09:32 pmIt is hard to believe that it's the day before the election.
Exactly 3 years and a day or two since the 2019 May Miracle that got Scott Morrison the top job for the last 3 years. It feels more like 33.
Back then he had only been in the job for 8 months and aside from the odd rant about the joys of coal, he had not done too much to piss many people off.
That all changed in December 2019 when he was in Hawaii on holiday while Australia burnt. I don't think most people resent a Prime Minister having a Christmas get away with his family. But it was what he did when the shit hit the fan that revealed his true character.
He tried to hide the fact that he was away on holiday. He did not return to Oz as soon as he realized the seriousness of the fires but tried to lay low hoping it would all blow over. Then he really put his foot in his mouth firstly by insisting that Jen and the kids wanted to go to Hawaii, then the immortal words that may be written on his gravestone "I don't hold a hose, mate"
Ted Cruz then did an encore of sQomo's performance by escaping to Mexico while Texas froze.
When Scott Morrison finally returned and did the hard hat, hi vis tour of the bushfire affected areas, he managed to turn it into a bunch of sQomo photo ops. Particularly appalling were the endless rounds of non consensual hand shakes with exhausted fire fighters who had every right to be peeved because in April of the previous year, a group of them repeatedly tried to get meetings with him to warn about the upcoming fire seasons from hell along with a list of actions to mitigate such disasters. sQomo kept fobbing them off.
The Feds did reasonably well during the beginning of the COVID pandemic but mainly because they were dragged kicking and screaming by the states. sQomo wanted to do a Boris Johnson. Just let it rip, herd immunity etc long before a vaccine was even near the drawing board.
Then he spent the best part of 2021 pissing off the women of Australia with the cover ups of a rape that took place in the offices of Parliament a few doors down from his office. Then the stories came out about dirty deeds done on desks and how the cleaning crew was sent in to the rape crime scene instead of detectives.
I can only hope that Australia thinks of 3 more years of sQomo the same way that the USA thought of 4 more years of trump.
The alternative Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has done a lot of stumbling, bumbling and fumbling on the election trail but I'd rather vote for a party led by some one incompetent but decent who delegates to the smartest people in the room (which he had to do when he came down with Covid while on the campaign trail) rather than a party that cares only about big coal, big gas and big bucks led by a nasty narcissist who is not only incompetent but also malevolent.
A creep who tackles seven year old kids at a football game just for photo ops. Such a lack of judgement is far worse than not knowing the current Reserve Bank cash rate or the unemployment rate.
Because it is much easier to change what you know than to change your character.
If sQomo does get the boot, I will be all ears to hear what Emmanuael Macron will have to say about it.
A Snailish Serpent
22/04/2022 10:22 pmI am such a David Rowe junkie. I have been collecting political cartoons since the 1980s. In those days I had to rely on cutting them out of papers that my parents bought. If I could remember where I put them, I would probably find that they are all yellow and crumbling to pieces by now. The Internet makes it so much easier to get lots of pictures in excellent condition looking just as crisp as on the first day they were published.
Most of the pictures are now on the Tweet Stone because I noticed quite a while ago that nothing is more likely to make the Big Mac crash than to try resurrect an image that I have downloaded. (The above image is hot linked)
But it took me a good 10 minutes just to load a picture in a tab that was already open. So not a good omen for any attempt at squiggling.
I finally manage to slink upstairs after at least a week procrastinating, only to find the spinning beachball of Doom and assorted other obstacles.
It was already a nightmare waiting for a stupid online course to load but Dreamwidth is just as bad. I guess the Big Mac is over 12 years old now so the self destruct button is long overdue to go off any day now.
So I am still pretty much in Read Only mode. Looking at my DW friends pages but rarely ever commenting much lately.
I just cannot get back into the habit of squiggling. It is strange to think that I used to post and comment a lot more when I didn't even have a computer or Tweet Stone. I used to go down to a local netcafe mainly devoted to pimple faced teens playing World of Warcraft.
Netcafes have pretty much gone the way of the video and record store.
I have also been busy reading the newspapers keeping up with all the election gossip as well as a certain "Special Military Operation".
Who would have ever imagined that the Ukrainians would be still holding out some 8 weeks on? I am sure that Putin certainly didn't.
The Ukraine post office even found time to release a set of stamps commemorating Snake Island. Soon they will need a new set featuring the latest instalment - the Russian warship that fucked itself.
I wonder if the Moskva will become the new Kursk. I have just got to that chapter in the Anna Politkovskaya book from 2005 "Putin's Russia"
There are also a lot of really good podcasts on BBC Radio 4. One series about Putin, another about Covid Conspiracies, the War on Truth and the current one that I am addicted to - The Coming Storm - about the back story of Q Anon. One early episode was a very informative 4Chan 101. I had heard so many horror stories about that hell hole but never quite knew what it was about. I definitely get the vibe of an army of incels lurking in their parents' basement feeling resentful that the world is not devoted to making them happy.
I had no idea that 4Chan and friends were the source of Anonymous, Q Anon and Pizzagate.
You know you are getting old when events that you remember as if they were yesterday have somehow become ancient history.
The Ides of April
08/04/2022 11:00 pmNo need to knife a man who is already committing political suicide.
It's one thing having your enemies say nasty things about you but when the worst insults are coming from your own side, then you really have problems.
I guess sQomo will pull the election trigger sometime this weekend. I bet he wishes he could do a Xi or a Putin and declare himself to be Prime Monster for the next 20 years.
The latest date he can choose is Saturday 21st May. Only 2 months ago, that seemed very safely far away. But now sQomo will definitely need another miracle to win this time.
Since I live in a marginal seat, life is about to get very interesting.
Just checking in
31/03/2022 09:48 pmDavid Rowe has a way of scaring the hell out people with his uncanny cartoons. I was in the middle of posting this entry when it just completely disappeared. I tried opening it in another tab but in spite of so called autosave, there is simply no trace of it to be found anywhere. Just another day dealing with those damned Dementors who have made themselves at home for nearly 3 months now and appear to have no plans to pack their bags any time soon. ( Black magic )
A Sizzled Christmas
25/12/2021 07:00 pmNormally at this time of day, I would be out and about watering the weeds. But it is still nearly 40 celsius outside. I got in early and did the poor critters this morning around 6am when it was still a gorgeous cool and breezy morning. I watched the birds flittering about and the odd gecko or two scurrying up and down the old gum tree. But by 9am I had gone inside and battened down the hatches. I put down the roller shutters on the eastern windows and sliding door and they will not be coming up again until some time on Tuesday when this infernal weather comes to an end.
Last Christmas we also had a 40 degree day but then I could stay out in the garden until midday before it finally got too hot. I think it cooled down a bit the next day. This time the heatwave started on Friday with a 39 and we will have a 44 tomorrow, a 40 on Monday followed by a 39 on Tuesday. But the devil is in the detail. With minimum temperatures of 25 plus, there will be a lot of sleepless nights for anyone with air conditioning or fans in the house.
Meanwhile, Covid has finally found its way to Dursleyville. The first i heard of it was an email from Transperth informing all potential passengers that masks would be mandatory on all public transport as of 6pm that evening.
An unvaccinated backpacker arrived from Queensland just one hour before the deadline where Queensland changed status from low to medium risk. After midnight all inbound travelers from there needed to be double vaxxed or to go into 14 days quarantine.
He had been night clubbing most of last weekend then suddenly fell sick on Wednesday. He took a Covid test and it came back positive. So that was the trigger for the mask mandate.
No snap lockdown like last time but all the close and even casual contacts from a very large list of hot spots are exepcted to go into isolation for 14 days with varying rules for the 2 different categories.
It turns out that Patient 1133 has the Delta variant and not the more infectious Omicron. i guess that explains why there are only 7 cases linked to him so far.
Crazy Coronamas
21/12/2021 12:45 pmI have not been sucked down some Covid conspiracy FOX hole or abducted by aliens. I haven't even been crushed to bits by a falling Christmas tree. The explanation for the serpent absence is much more simple.
Since Nanowrimo finished on Tuesday 30th November, I have slinked upstairs to use the Big Mac desktop with a proper keyboard just twice this month. This is the second time. Typing anything longer than 280 characters on the old Tweet Stone is far too frustrating for a serpent used to touch typing. So I always save emails and that sort of thing for the Big Mac. So when I don't go near the desktop, it just doesn't happen.
Since sunset these days is around 19.30, there is also more temptation to lurk in the garden and less inside the house. I also naively thought that I could do an online course or two during those 6 weeks off work. But the map is not the territory. I managed to do just one quiz. I may consider moving the goal posts to start the course again at a later date but not so sure if I will do any better next time especially when the Fringe Festival starts mid January.
Either today or tomorrow is the date of the solstice. I won't be doing sunset at the beach as I used to. I will lurk around the Secret Garden Cafe instead, reading the papers, doing the Tuesday puzzle pages and planning assorted goals for 2022. One of those will be a list of 24 books to read next year. I have January sorted.
Any suggestions for the rest of the year?
On the Nose
14/11/2021 10:22 pmDavid Rowe delivers the most delicious Easter Eggs ever.
I think this little tweek would make the Scomo monument the most brilliant thing ever. It would be hilarious if someone crowd funded it or at least got the David Rowe cartoon on a billboard or two. Mind you, that would be a huge conflict of interest for the artist if a political party was behind it.
The Emperor's New Cloak
06/11/2021 10:00 pmDavid Rowe has done it again. This time he is reusing and recycling all those old Trump Naked Emperor masterpieces. Since sQomo is also a trump minion and a narcissist in his own right, the transformation is just so suitable. I am waiting with baited breath for the Royal Portrait make over.
Those smoke stack hats and sQomo Sharts socks are a stroke of genius. I have been trying for ages without success to snaffle David Rowe's Vitruvian sQomo as an icon to use for sQomo posts.
Since David Rowe has been on FIRE the last few weeks and I have 6 weeks sick leave, I suspect there will be a lot more of them. I really need to find some way to get my stash of David Rowe cartoons off my phone and on to some safer place. Because the phone is Android and the Big Mac is Apple, I cannot think of any straightforward way of doing this.
About 6 months ago David Rowe just vanished from Twitter. All those quote tweets I had made of his amazing trump cartoons just vanished. Not a single cartoon was to be seen. All GONE. It turned out that the absence was only for a week but if felt like an eternity. Ever since then, I don't want to leave it to chance. But I do wonder, when we can click and save all sorts of amazing artworks for free, how on earth do such artists make a living?
In the meantime, on account of those 6 work free weeks, I got tempted by an email from Coursera and signed up for an introductory course on Cybersecurity. Especially after one pesky charity store that I work for is demanding that all staff and volunteers get their police clearances through Equifux I did find another way of getting the Police Clearance and dropped by the shop to give it to them. Or rather, to get email details so I could send it since I only had it in pdf form rather than a printed hard copy. That was last Tuesday but Equifux are still spamming me with reminder emails every single day. Yes. I know that is not the company's real name but they deserve it after their pathetic response to the giant hack of March 2017.
Now I must be off. I'm currently just past 13,333 words for Nanowrimo and the target quota for today is the nice round 10,000 words. So that means I am now 2 days ahead of schedule. I had hoped to stretch it out to 4 by now.
What I notice with Nanowrimo, when all those sprinters who rely on initial motivation to get going and to clock up the words start falling by the wayside during the infamous Hump of the dreaded Week 2, that is when this plodding old serpent starts warming up. I see no reason why this year should be any different especially for the first time in 5 years, the Muse has finally returned so I now no longer have the problem of the blank page and lack of inspiration but for the old fingers to be unable to keep up with the stream of thoughts rushing through the old serpent skull begging to find their way onto the page.

Substandard
02/11/2021 11:50 pmDavid Rowe has been on FIRE over the last few weeks. I have been busy saving his cartoons to my stash rather than sharing them on Dreamwidth. I wonder what it will take for the Murdochs to finally decide that sQomo is too much on the nose. It is particularly disgusting how sQomo makes it all about him when it comes to taking credit for the work of others but all about the honour of Australia when Monsieur Macron goes out of his way to distinguish between the country and the idiot supposed to be running it.
The Answer is Blowing in the Wind
15/10/2021 09:00 pmLook Who's Back
16/08/2021 09:20 pmI guess Don the Con who took US troops out of Kurdistan and announced they would leave Afghanistan last May is now going around saying "I told you so" while also finding some excuse to explain how he missed his coronation last Friday. I guess the 13th was just too unlucky for him.
The events of the last few days, especially in Kabul, it is so reminiscent of those scenes from the 1970s when the helicopters took the last remaining stragglers from the US embassy in Vietnam. Whatever made the US think that it could run the joint when both the Brits and the Russians failed? They were also the great empires of their day.
Meanwhile back in Oz, sQomo will be happy for the distraction of the Taliban since it has pushed his incompetence off the front pages. For the moment.
The Mixed Messages Hurdle Relay
08/08/2021 08:00 pmI have watched hardly any Olympics at all but I will miss David Rowe's amazing Covid Coverage
. ( Track and Trace ) And that ends the Oz olympics coverage for another 3 years.
David Rowe has also drawn some amazing Trump toons too. It's much harder to find them now since his presidency is almost ancient history. I have saved hundreds of them. I really must download them to the Big Mac. Just the phone and the Google cloud is not sufficient for this paranoid python.
I have been a political cartoon junkie since the USSR invasion of Afghanistan and aside from the Irish Martin Turner, I have never encountered a cartoonist even remotely as good as Mr Rowe
PS This is the second time I have enountered the ghastly space stealers on Dreamwidth.
The monsters gobble all the paragraphs and space. I find that i have to go to Rich Text edit to fix up the fugliness.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Scotty from Coverups
08/07/2021 07:10 pmThere are just layers and layers of hidden Easter eggs in this wicked work. Aside from the obvious Covid cover ups and stuff ups, there is also a new book spilling the beans on the creeps in sQomo's Old Boys Club cabinet.
Menacing Controlling Wallpaper
In the meantime, I have been having my own dramas with tradies. No wall paper jobs. Just plumbers. First thing I have learned is that they operate in a world with the wierdest clocks.
A 9am job is considered EARLY if they turn up at 10am. 12.30 is more like it.
But beggars can't be choosers. It is a seller's market. I guess it always has been and don't they know it.
Meanwhile, over in the Badlands of Sydney, it turns out that the Gold Standard of contact tracing and containing the virus without SHUTTING DOWN THE ECONOMY has turned into lead. They are averaging 30 cases a day and with the more infectious Delta variant and exponential growth, those numbers are going to explode any day now.
Over here in the west we are the other extreme - going into short sharp lockdowns with only a couple of cases which has happened 3 times so far this year. I suspect they could safely up that number to 4 or 5 before triggering the nuclear option. But the virus and its variants have been around long enough now for people to see what happens when you just let it rip because The Economy. People who get sick don't go working or spending nor do people who are afraid of getting sick.
Look after people's health and the economy will take care of itself.
I have to wait another 6 weeks before getting my second dose of AZ. Since it's the first one that usually causes the trouble, if there is trouble, I guess I am pretty much out of the woods on that one.
