Grounded

Izzie slinks in out of the hell that is summer in this bit of Oz. The crisp and crunchy cold spell is well and truly over. The flies returned last Tuesday and now they have been joined by the stinking sizzling troppo brain fog inducing humidity. Can't believe that there's people who pay good money to go on holidays to places like Bali, Singapore or Malaysia where it's just like this ALL the time.
What should have been a chirpy cheery start to two weeks holiday begins not just with the weather from hell but a nasty screechy scratchy sore throat and croaky froggy voice to match. It's almost like some inner bitch takes great delight in sabotaging this serpent's fun

Been making the most of the last months of glorious weather to get all sorts of stuff planted in the Lair. Spent little time online not just due to all those 7am starts at work but because of several inexplicably strange crashes just around 8.30pm when a sudden urge to snooze descends and cannot be resisted. Sometimes as often as 3 times in one week which obviously meant that not much was getting done in the house or on the computer. Still got those infernal taxes to do yet.
Only wishing that yesterday was one of those days

In spite of being all yucky and icky sticky - did mix up a big batch of organic potting mix with the tasty ingredients that arrived last week. Swept the paving and did a bit of a kitchen blitz and generally got into the swing of a good clean start to the holidays. So was looking forward to our reward of an evening cruising in Cyberia.
Oh silly Izzie. Should have drank a glass or two of red and gone to bed instead.
Firefox was being a right bit of shit and tossing spinning beachballs all over the place and constantly freezing. When it takes more than an hour to even get into the yahoo owlery to just check on the latest mail, then you know things are seriously sad and bad. It's the sort of performance one would expect from dinosaur dialup
Probably not helped by attempts at ticking off items on our download list - a couple of podcasts from Radio National which were progressing at the freeway speed of 8kb per second. One of those was 50mb. Will be in no great hurry to sign up for that experience again

But until last night's lousy online adventures, tons and tons of happy stuff going on. Never got around to squiggle about any of them. But lots involved weeds and green things. Especially amusing was the idea of thinking outside the box for sources of stuff. When you don't have wheels, it's kind of tricky getting garden supplies. But Izzie saw some of those awful squeaky white polystyrene boxes outside the kitchen at work. Got to thinking that they'd be just perfect for a worm farm or growing tomatoes and herbs in and bestest of all they stack really well and already have drainage holes provided.
So one at a time, got six or seven home on the broomstick. Then we thinks how silly of Izzie not to have noticed yet another free resource there for the taking. Asked one of the cooks if she could save the vegie scraps - potato and pumpkin peels, lettuce and cabbage leaves etc so that Izzie could use them to feed worms
Already got about five or six fat bags and buried them all in the garden. There's even potato plants sprouting out of the piles. So Izzie's garden gets free nutritious and kosher fertilizer and they get less stuff going in their bin and ending up in landfill. Now that's what Izzie calls value adding.
Due to the evil green serpent's policy of not allowing nasty petrochemical NPK fertilizers past the gate, not to even speak of that pestilential poison Roundup or any other pesticides or herbicides of any variety, we need to think of sneakier and slower ways of getting the garden to grow all green without the old quick oil fix.

And tomorrow is the start of the ABC gardening expo and the last chance to see the greatest Green God of all - the gorgeous and adorable Peter Cundall. Will be going with the ma who also drools over him too. Must remind her to bring her camera.
So it should be a wonderful opportunity to get more inspiration, ideas, tips and tricks from the permaculture and organic sorts who frequent those sorts of shows.
Here's hoping it finally rains before then because another day like this will certainly zap the sap out of even the most enthusiastic green creature.
