Izzie's pottering along nicely with the new "Not buying as much as we used to" policy. There's a few interesting side effects but it would be rather sneaky to say they were unintended. Rather they are pretty much the point of the whole thing

While folks in some circles are busy stacking up their stash for a gloomy doomy day, Izzie's busy trying to get rid of hers
So was a very good serpent today and instead of eating out, cooked some munchies at home
Already had pasta and pesto for Tuesday's dinner and it was sort of embarassing just how quickly it cooked. In the sense that Izzie has so so often not eaten a proper dinner because it just takes so so much time
Was surprised to find that in spite of all the stuff in the pantry none of it included any tomato based pasta sauces so there was nothing to posh up the pasta. But then remembered the two little jars of pesto and the bag of macadamia nuts

Tonight, got even more inspired. Sat outside with the big bad bowl of pasta with pesto and parmesan and grabbed a handful of basil leaves from the polystyrene boxes as well as three ripe tomatoes. It sure made an amazing difference. Pity though that it's not the lush green Genovese variety. The snails got all of those.

Also tried a few of the experimental cherry tomatoes left drying near the window for the last few weeks. They are well and truly shrivelled up now. Will be interesting to see if there's any bad bugs there because they sure tasted fine
Such a pity that unlike Petunia, Izzie does not yet have the problem of how to use up ridiculous quantities of tomatoes all ripening at the same time. And most of hers are self seeded weeds that she did not even plant.

Pesto along with hummous is now supposed to be one of those DIY things. Got all the ingredients to hand except the most important of all - sufficient quantities of the evil green weed
There sure is an incentive now to try get some more. The stuff we had tonight was not the usual local pesto but an imported Italian version.
While it is the original of the species, it does have the disadvantage of being made with disgusting slimy greasy Italian olive oil which Izzie finds rather revolting
This is one case where green is not good. Oz olive oil is yellow rather than green but much much nicer. Another interesting substitute is macadamia oil. Macadamia nuts also make an interesting replacement for pine nuts. Much better than cashews which is the usual thing here in the cheaper brands. But if you want macadamia pesto, you've got to make your own because it's way too expensive to appear on the shelves and certainly not at a price that this serpent would be prepared to pay. That's where the good old Braun zapper is worth its weight in gold.

So must go peeking in our big bag of seeds because there's got to be Sweet Basil in there somewhere. Can plant it out with the batch of sunflowers that have just started sprouting

Did not get the nasty stinking sizzling 37 celsius today that the weather bureau were predicting. It was hot but beautiful and breezy. A most gorgeous day indeed. Just as well that Izzie does not base her agenda on the predictions of those sad bunch of Sybils.
There's supposed to be another 37 in the pipeline tomorrow. Will be interesting to see what happens
