izmeina: (Don't panic)
Izzie's all in a tizzie. Way too much excitement today for such an introverted serpent. But we ain't seen nothing yet. However that's for another post. Will stick to today's agenda for the present
This python's procrastination is proving to be most painful indeed. The annual arts festival will be starting on Friday 13th. Lucky for some. Cannot help but be reminded of this time last year. Went into the city to see the opening event which was going to be some fabulous French fireworks and acrobatics. Silly buggers canceled at the last minute due to windy weather. Pathetic. It's nearly always windy on the river. So slinked back to the Lair all sulky and grumpy after a wasted detour into downtown Dursleyville. Should have just curled up in the Serpent Basket and snoozed. Instead, slinked into Cyberia only to be deluged by hordes of evil spinning beachballs followed by the Black Screen of Death. The Precious crashed and ending up having to zap the hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch

So far so good this time. Was peeking at the paper and there was a story about a cabaret show that will be part of the festival. The name Camille O Sullivan rang a bell. Heard her on the radio more than a year ago. She had a blood curdling gorgeous voice and was just as fascinating in her off stage incarnation. She was so good that Izzie made a special effort to listen to the repeat of the show
So thinks Izzie - must slink off straight away to the box office and book ourselves a ticket. That's certainly an excellent excuse to cheat on the new year's resolution of 100 silver sickles per week spending money
Figured that we may as well take a proper peek at the rest of the musical events to see if there's anything else worth booking. Yessss - one Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu. The plastic fantastic will be well and truly stretched today. But it's most definitely worth it
Well - makes our way to the Majesty Theatre where it's possible to book for any of the festival shows. Both of them sold out more than two weeks ago. Why do the buggers in the paper do these sorts of stories if not to torment and gloat at snailish serpents?
But the real killer was that Izzie had no one to blame but her snailish self. Been in possession of the festival program since last November but simply did not peek at the music section. Did have our eye on one play - Izzie's most favorite ever -"Antigone" Buying a ticket was on the serpent to do list for the last 3 months or so but there seemed to be some sort of big black hole when it came to doing the deed. Needless to say when finally got to the box office last Friday - those special scrooge Ten Dollar Tuesdays were well and truly booked out. Got the Monday 23rd preview instead which was $25 compared to $35 for the other days

So procrastinating had cost this python not only 15 silver sickles but the pick of the bestest seats in the house. Could have had any day and any seat we wanted way back in November.
In the case of the two music shows, all is not lost. The venue is especially set up for the festival and is on the Esplanade park in the centre of the city. All the tickets are sold out but nothing stopping a serpent lurking around outside like we did many moons ago at the U2 concert.
And on the subject of concerts - yet another Izzie stuff up. Went to the zoo on Wednesday - first time in ages. Either it's been too hot or Izzie has been too busy.
For the first time in 6 months, finally got to see our serpent friends again. The last 3 visits, the reptile house was closed for renovations. Such withdrawal symptoms. But we finally got to see our scaly friends again. Lots of changes. New hissers on the block are the itsie bitsie teenie weenie and very very sweet pygmy pythons. The other extreme - the monstrous reticulated python was curled up in a spiral and snoozing as usual. No yawns this time.
The zoo closes at 5pm but there seemed to be a lot of unusual activity around including some very loud noises from the picnic area. Sounded like some nasty rap musicians were practising for a concert. The gates were all still open at 5pm
Was most curious indeed as their concerts are usually always on Saturdays. Could have taken advantage of the late opening hours to slink a bit longer but had come straight from work at 3pm and wanted a fix of caffeine
Only today when reading about the Camille O Sullivan cabaret, came across a rave review of a zoo concert. It turned out to be David Byrne from the Talking Heads.
Such a slack serpent. While not mad about that mob, don't mind them either and would have certainly stayed until 9pm or so if only we had known. Somehow don't think that security would have been going around evicting all the earlier visitors

But Izzie had a chance later in the day to make amends for all that pathetic procrastination. Also got a bit of practice on Sunday evening. It's amazing how much we can do when it is a matter of urgency or necessity
So much can happen in only a week. Tonight will be our very last night in the present serpent basket. Will be at the ma's tomorrow and on Sunday night will no longer be a hermit serpent but sharing with a pair of critters from Mauritius.
Two weeks short of eleven years in the Lair - will be so very very strange to no longer be alone after all that time
