Izzie's been at the zoo lots lately. Not just because the old zoo card expires on Saturday and it's time to renew it but because a baby giraffe was born in the last week of May and Izzie wanted to see the little critter before it grew up too much

The first visit on Tuesday 9th began with the obligatory visit to the Snake pit. There was a new snake in the house - a children's python. It's small with diamond patterned scales and a gorgeous diamond shaped head. But most interesting indeed - it swayed and waved about as Izzie drooled over its gorgeousness. This activity did not go unnoticed. One of the zoo volunteers nearby called another one over to watch what little snakie was doing. They were of the opinion that it must be attracted by the green shirt Izzie was wearing.
Most amused indeed. But in the end it was time to say goodbye to this gorgeous and curious python and head off to the savannah in search of the new baby on the block

The place was packed as everyone else at the zoo was most likely paying a visit for that very reason. It's usually the elephants that are the stars of the show but this time they played second fiddle to the giraffes
Seen him last Wednesday and today too. They grow so fast. There were less people this time and lots of giraffe kisses between mother and baby. They always save the best photo opportunities for when the least number of horrid humans are lurking

The visits to the snake pit were short and sweet both today and last week. Was only thinking last Wednesday how wonderfully peaceful and quiet it was in the reptile house when there was a sudden invasion of squealing beasties and Izzie made a quick getaway. Today was much the same. The next two weeks will be the school holidays so will be staying well away from the zoo during that time. The museums won't be safe either. Looks like the only refuge will be the art galleries

It's so nice having the zoo on our work bus route - on two of them actually. Not one the way to the Lair but the other direction. Locals get a 10% discount on the annual zoo pass. The lady on the counter commented that 4 digit membership numbers are rather rare so it must be rather old. Since 1996 says Izzie when it was $$30 for the year and $$6 for a single visit. Now it's $$70 without the local discount and $$20 for a single visit so there is a bigger incentive now to join.
It is easily the best value $$60 something we spend all year. Because even if all the animals were to disappear tomorrow, the zoo is a place still worth visiting for all the gorgeous gardens and the wonderful bird life. There are a lot of creatures who have made the place their home, many of whom are not officially zoo residents
There are egrets and ibises and the only place in this bit of Oz where you can see real squirrels
But the best thing about being a member is that because you can visit as often as you like during the year, you can drop in for an hour or two and just look at one or two sections. There's no need to 'Do the Zoo" and try see everything in one day and end up seeing nothing.
Izzie can easily spend 30 minutes looking at just the ghost bats whereas other folks will walk by, stand there for a minute, see nothing happening and then going on to see the next new thing
Got to thinking that the grown ups zoo cafe could be a suitable spot for this year's nanowrimo cafe since the old favorite in the city has now closed. The zoo friends 10% discount at the cafe is a nice incentive too.

But the search for the perfect cafe for squiggling serpents is another story in itself.
