A Blast from the Past
18/11/2018 11:22 pmToday is an occasion for several creepy anniversaries. The most infamous one world wide is the 40th anniversary of the Jonestown massacre. Drinking the Kool Aid has never been the same since. Last time I recall anything even remotely so weird and creepy but with a much lower body count was the Japanese Aum Shinrikyo sect and their murderous attack on a Tokyo subway
Of course in Oz, the word Jonestown usually conjures up awful images of a certain Sydney broadcaster famous for his two minute hate sessions and rabble rousing antics. Like the Dodgy Don, he is very fond of calling people to be fired but usually prefers to get others to do his dirty work
Here in Oz the other anniversary was the murders in a nursing home where a definitely dodgy registered nurse set the place on fire at night to cover up his pilfering from the dangerous drugs supplies. He lit not one but two fires at night knowing full well that the low staffing levels meant that it would be well nigh impossible to put out both fires. There were 18 people who died in this fire and the nurse was first on the scene playing the hero. But pyromaniacs are famous for this sort of behaviour so he came under immediate suspicion
The nursing home where the serpent worked used this event as an exercise in spin. After some hand wringing and generic platitudes, the staff were expected to attend fire safety lectures all conveniently timed to start at 1pm when half the staff were finishing their shifts for the day so therefore expected to attend in their own time without pay.
I came across the script issued from head office with the blurb about counselling being available. Needless to say, anyone sufficiently emotionally affected to ever consider using such a service would automatically be added to the pink slip list
It was a performance dripping in sympathy. Almost as convincing as the latest appalling appearance from Dodgy Don
