It's been a strange week in Izzieland. It's so so nice to be on holidays and not have the flu, a twisted ankle or a case of inexplicable crankiness, gloom and demented doom
Was very lazy yesterday, did not leave the Lair and spent most of the time curled up in the serpent sack instead of decluttering and doing creative things
So today did not cheat and turn off the alarm when it went off at 6am to get up for the Friday morning speaking group
Not only was it a gorgeous but not yet sunny day but there was a big fat full moon hovering in the western sky.

Went to the gorgeous Queens Gardens after the meeting to read, listen to the radio and drool over a new dark tarot deck. There's two gorgeous furball cygnets that are just over 3 weeks old. They are not that much bigger than on first seeing them two weeks ago.

After that, spent the rest of the day in one of the oldest surburbs which used to be a little town in its own right. It too has beautiful parks with churches, old houses with turrets and a gorgeous garden cafe. Oh and very importantly - a second hand book shop full of all sorts of strange stuff. They seem to specialize in fantasy and science fiction.
Picked up a rather old and interesting book called "The Rational Tarot" from the old days (ie 1976) when there were very few books on the subject and a lot of them spouted new age Egyptian nonsense
The writer absolutely despises the Rider Waite Smith deck and never misses a chance to snark at it. He prefers the even uglier Marseille deck. Pity the book was from a time when lots of pictures were expensive so it's all descriptions and full of all sorts of fascinating information about colour and shape symbolism in the old decks. There's rather more to the Marseille than meets the eye - ugly and all as it is
The book is a gold mine of information for DIY wannabees like the Izzie.

Had made a list of correspondences and symbols to use as substitutes and additions to the usual wands, cups, swords and coins and was surprised to see that triangles, circles, crosses and squares appear in the Marseille deck as structural forms apparently linked to the relevant elements that Izzie had assigned. The colours match too but then they are reasonably obvious - red for fire, blue for water, yellow for air and green for earth.

But it's not enough to have all those colours and shapes swirling around in the serpent skull. It's time to catch the critters and get them on paper.

Unfortunately, one of Izzie's favorite places for inspiration and ideas for squiggling has just recently disappeared to be replaced by some nasty new Thai restaurant with awful neon signs and stuff. The days of $5 coffee and cake, large bottles of cold water and free wifi are well and truly over. Had started lurking in the village cafe a lot last November and had it lined up for a main lurking ground for this year's Nanowrimo.
Loved the place not just because it was cheap and quiet but it was in an old atmospheric house with a quaint side garden with plane trees. But maybe it was just too quiet and the owners went broke.
First found the place by accident in February 2009 and by October it had become a regular lurking ground. It also happened to be a few doors down from the shop with the laptops and iMacs. But will now need to sniff out a new lurking and writing friendly cafe.

Tomorrow will be wearing the culture vulture hat and off on the heritage trail for yet another Fremantle festival. Might even manage a few farmers markets before then. They are especially attractive after watching the documentary "Food, inc"
