The Moon in June
13/06/2003 08:40 pmWell...another Izzie effort at procrastination. I am becoming rather an expert at it.
Today was our unofficial 'Moonrise' Party because tomorrow is the minor inconvenience of work.
One day Iz will finally get to catch the critter in the act. Always seems to be up for about 20 mins before I ever see it. Well ....today of course the moon came up before sunset.. about one hour..so that does make it difficult to find. But one day I do intend to catch the very first little speck on the horizon. Preferably as soon as possible. And one of those days it will be at One Tree Hill in Auckland. (Another addition to the 'must do' Izzie list)
Last month it was due about 15 mins after sunrise. Perfect conditions...Iz was delighted. But at almost the last minute the clouds came and it got very windy and rained for the rest of the evening.
I am sure there is a simple explanation but Izzie does not know it, why the moon or sun appear so large on the horizon and much smaller when directly overhead. I also notice that it looks smaller on the hill where I usually go to watch it than it does at the street at the bottom of the hill where I have to go to catch my bus.
I found a baby for Baba Yaga.. the latest addition to the Slytherin shrine..courtesy of the Cat. Just happened to be walking by a novelty shop when I seen the cutest teeniest weeniest witches on key rings. This one was GREEN. Izzie just had to offer her a home worthy of her green graciousness. And two doors down...yet more temptations. Chokeby Road had 300g bags of dark couverture on special. They look like they began life as Easter eggs. Was only getting ever nostalgic on MSN talking to Andrie the previous day about the complicated rituals of truffle making. This was one of Izzies' favorite activities in a past life. Pretty straightforward if you don't mind using cheap and nasty compounded chocolate to dip the truffles into. All sorts of dodgy ingredients - palm oil in particular. But Iz is a chocolate snob...nothing but proper chocolate with nothing but cocoa butter in the oil department. Problem is it is the most unforgiving temperamental stuff imaginable. Concocting Polyjuice potion look positively simple in comparison. You make an itsie bitsie mistake and instead of bright shiny brown morsels, you end up with dull flat greyish monstrosities with streaks of white. A bit like what happens to choccie that have been left in the sun, melted and hardened again. The taste is not really affected but they just look.. well OFF.
They also had Zentis Marzipan. Not bad but nothing compares to the one and only Niederegger from Lubeck. Lubeck is ..well used to be like one ginormous Diagon Alley. one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen in my entire existence. Any of you lurkers ever been there?
What Iz is really looking forward to after the exams are over is to finally get another fix of her Happy Potter pills. Been three months without a fix. So hungry.. for so long...would have been sssso nice to have read them all again...looking for clues, plotting theories or whatever. But the Goblins have other plans.
But the bookstores are really making a most pathetic effort indeed. At least in July the wickedly wonderful Wizard's Express steam train is running again. I will be booking for Thursday 10 July. Was this time last year they ran the very first one and Izzie was on it. Simply gorgeous. But it was a Saturday so there was not many children and a lot of train spotters. They learnt their lesson and now run them mainly during school holidays on weekdays. Izzie always snakes up for the occasion. Green hat, green scarf.. even green shoes. I even wear my 'Order of the Green Spiral' badge. And this time I will be bringing an....er ORANGE book. One week to go.......
