A quick Izzie squiggle. Been a busy week in the lair and circumstances conspire to keep Iz away from Secret Diary Land. The little green book has been getting all the attention instead. Typing is much quicker of course thans squiggling with green ink and at least I can be sure of being able to read it three days later. But there is one big problem. Unless Iz wins the lotto and gets a laptop - the quill is infinitely more portable.
Iz has hung up the green hat and taken out the boring beige one. It still does have a green ribbon, a phoenix feather ;) and Slytherin serpent sticker but does not look quite as eccentric. But the main feature is that it is lighter and has a much wider brim and when it is a stinking steaming nasty 39 celsius outside then such minor considerations do become rather important.
Both hats got left at home for nasty newt day. We are not allowed to wear them (no exceptions - not even for religious reasons ;))
Iz didn't even wear the black jacket with the Green spiral badge (was pickled enough already without it) and the only concession to serpentine pride was the two rings. Rather - the One ring and another one which is in the image of a snake.
Will get back to those nasty Newts in the next instalment but the other major interesting event is Izzie's favorite book sale. Looks like Thomas Moore (or is it More?) has got a bit of a following among the Axis of Evil. Got the most fascinating 'Care of the Soul' for less than 2 silver sickles. I read it two years ago and was most impressed.
This guy is a great believer in stories and symbolism. They also had that Carl Jung book with the male chauvinist piglet title. Iz added it to her big brown box along with another one from Rupert Sheldrake "The presence of the Past" This one was rather more expensive than Iz is used to paying at second hand book sales but his theories are really fascinating and Iz thinks they explain a lot of apparently unrelated issues.
It's like being a kid in a candy store. Honestly - will need 30 hours in the day and 8 days in the week to read all this stuff. There is another fascinating book with the interesting title "Swimming with Pirahnas makes you hungry" Seems to be a British version of the wonderful "Your money or your life" but is much funnier with some gorgeous fishy cartoon characters.
Another juicy morsel is the Readers Digest Reverse Dictionary. There was two copies. One cost 20 silver sickles without the jacket and the other which had the jacket was only 5! Iz always wanted one of these because it is full of the most useful trivia and snippets. RD really do come up with some pretty useful stuff occasionally.
There was even a cute little number by Beatrix Potter with the intriguing title of "The Adventures of Tom Kitten" but it came under the collectable category and was rather too decadently expensive for this stingy serpent. Also too expensive was "All I ever needed to know about business, I learnt from Microsoft"!
At least 3/4 of the Izzie library consists of books acquired at these sales. That is the big Izzie vice. Gobble gobble gobble. Can never walk out of a library or a booksale empty handed. Not your normal book shop mind you because I know that what is in the store today for 30 silver sickles will be in the UNICEF booksale next year for 5 or even 2 if one is very lucky.
Oh and Iz is happy. She got a love letter from the Goblins. After Wednesday's taxation exam thinking that I never wanting to see the wicked words 'Franking Credits' ever again - was pleasantly surprised to see that such nasty things comprised 317 of the Izzie 353 silver sickle tax refund cheque that arrived today. (And if Iz had been dumb enough to pay H&R Block to do it for her - those bastards would have charged just about two thirds of that much if not all of it.)
