Silly Snippets
15/01/2004 09:44 pmSome juicy tidbits for the Izzie Fairy Godmother who is fond of both Harry and languages and all sorts of other interesting things
Harry Potter and the Chinese Room
Since Iz refuses to resort to the Imperius Charm to get Google to find a particular poem and cannot succeed using sheer brute force - will just have to do with a book review with lots of tongue twisting links
Und auch etwas fur die kluge Katze! (Bei ihren Computer, findet Izzie kein 'Umlaut')
Interessantes Eulenmist

Wunderschön !
Date: 2004-01-16 08:19 am (UTC)Ok, you've convinced me to try reading HP in German :) I've got the 1st book as etext for palm (for free - pirated) and an German-English-German online dictionary for Palm (commercial - OH MY ! well, it's reasonably cheap and can come out useful anyway, the electronic dictionary devices are way more expensive)
Although I have to look up every second word, at the end most of the sentences manage to appear coherent ! :) which had never happened when trying this text for the 1st time, before the course (as for the course, I've completed the 1st part of the beginner part but am well behind on the exercises - it's very convenient to listen to lessons while walking, but impossible to read/write :) so got to do them all before proceeding...)
Btw what's this thing with pronouncing 't' at the end of some words (brennt, fahrt) as 'tz' ? another kind of accent ? (heard in the songs of Megaherz )
Re: Wunderschön !
Or it could simply be a 'Megaherz' trade mark - to rhyme with their name!
The most noticeable accent thing that Iz ever noticed was with 'Ich' and 'ch' in general. It ranges from a Russian 'x' or English 'h' all the way to ssssssssh. Still waiting to hear "Ich" like in the way Cockneys pronounce 'bottle'
Well if the Cat is going to such incredible lengths to read the German version of HP - Iz managed to get her paws on Book 2 from the library, then looks like there is no excuse for Iz to get going with the Russian ones and you know where I got that from. Izzie has learnt one little sentence off by heart! Care to guess which one?
But judging by the 'Chinese Room' link - looks like the Japanese translation is bordering on brilliant. No cheating sneaks there. The Mirror of Erised certainly impressed me. Iz even used the evil "Nozomi Kagami' as a pseudonym for posting evil messages in the Corridors over in the Domain of Dolores! A simple message spelled backwards and no one could work it out:(
