Sacrilege and Apostacy! Ickle Iz has NOT read "Lord of the Rings" (Does just the first two chapters count?) but drooooling over the Preciousssss in the movies - Iz couldn't help but wonder about the translated versions of the books or dubbed versions of the movies.
We wantses to know what they does with the Sneak. Like how does he talk when all those other nasty tricksie tongueses doesn't have such sibilant pluralses as we does in English.
(Iz noticed that Hagrid lost his quaint accent in the German Potter books - well Chamber of Secrets anyway)
This curious serpent needs to know.

I think the Russian translation is very poor - at least the version I found at www.litportal.ru (I believe there are many different translations). Here's one page with Gollum: http://www.litportal.ru/index.html?r=35&a=996&s=780&t=6261&p=16 There's nothing special about his accent...

Nasty stinking thingses. Don't you think - моя прелесть ;) We doesn't like them. Not nice.
So let Izzie guess. Too lazy to lurk through the whole thing but Iz thinks they were in the dead marshes with all those nasty nasty lightses.

Yes, the marshes. "моя прелесть" doesn't sound too bad, but "драгоценность" is IMHO a very bad translation for "precious". It sounds too heavy and doesn't convey the meaning of something dear/cherished but mostly means only an expensive physical object (jewelry).

More nasty stinkiness. Ickle Iz has just realized what exactly a 'Torbins' is and is well.... astonished!
"Нет, не этого Торбинса"
Like does this name mean something that Iz is missing. What's wrong with good old fashioned Bagginses?
Well of course we hate the Bagginses but they are so so much cuter.
Since they were so lucky to find a useful little word like "моя прелесть" that seems to not only sound suspiciously similar to the original but also conveys similar nuances unlike the clunky "драгоценность", you would think it shouldn't be too much effort to say "моя прелесccccть"
Iz just dreads to think what they did with the poetry. Naaa....the prospect of peeking is scarier than the hairy spiderses.

Торбинс is derived from Торба which is a translation for "bag" :) (more specifically, a kind of archaic word for a small bag used by farmers and poor people to carry stuff like personal things and food) As for me I don't care one way or another - the original name preserves the alliteration (Bilbo Baggins) but loses the meaning for those who don't speak English...

I just know that I don't want to be a translator of fiction :) sounds like an impossible job ! :)
