The Baptist book sale
20/03/2004 12:36 pmJust returned from the book sale across the road. Got myself some most preciousss little gems.
Was only bemoaning the fact that not only is it too difficult between work and goblins to get to the Izzie esoteric bookshops but it doesn't matter because I simply ain't got the money anyway. But in spite of that - still insisted after following those Catty links on adding a certain Anthony de Mello book to the Izzie wish list.
So imagine the Izzie surprise when hardly five minutes in the door - spotted the very thing that I'd been looking for. Got most of his 'stories' books except this one and there it is sitting on the table for the princely sum of two silver sickles. One happy Iz. Also found "The Tao of Pooh" and one nice Escher snakie picture book.
But was ever so surprised to bump into the resident evil overlord from the Izzie Friday morning public speaking group. He had the most enormous stack of ancient looking green volumes - something to do with Biblical studies. And there's Iz thinking he was a died in the wool fan of Frederik Nietzsche.
He also had other strange titles about Hermeneutics - whatever that may be and all sorts of other esoteric theological offerings.
There was quite a few Stephen King hardbacks there for only $$2-3 but Iz resisted since I know will never have time to read them anyway. But they were in such good condition and so damned cheap.
But the big catch of the day was the wicked book with the impossible yellow triangle - the one that Petunia hates even more than the Potter books - the one that corrupted Izzie beyond redemption "Godel, Escher, Bach" also for only $$2. Never mind that I already got a copy - Iz never misses a chance to infect others with her favorite evil memes and this is certainly one of them. Now which worthy victim shall it be?
Was only a pity that the morning teas were not as cheap as the books. Iz didn't have breakfast and had the munchies but 3 silver sickles for a cup of tea and two itsie bitsie teenie weenie halves of a scone not even the size of a mouthful - no way. And since the pennies have got to be watched or will end up broke like most of last week - temptation must be resisted.
There was some fascinating stuff like "Seduced by Satan' and "The mysterious mark of the New Age - Satan's plan for world domination" etc - and the obligatory rubbish by Joseph Girzone who makes James Radfield look like William Shakespeare. But as one may have expected - no Potters - not that Izzie needs any - but there is always those evil memes to be passed on.
Now it's time to hop on the broomstick and have lunch before starting work at 3pm today.
Well...work has been and gone. Never seem to have time to say much about the gossip there. Still haven't mentioned the super scary man who Iz called Professor Quirrell. He died last week and has been replaced by a tattoed man. Iz hates tattoos and they look particulary pathetic on an eighty something year old. This guy has even got them on his knuckles - lucky they don't spell out LOVE on one hand and HATE on the other - simply his name and another which I assume was his girlfriend or wife - some significant other anyway.
But I cannot possibly let 20 March 2004 go by without....well as the old bit of advice goes "Whatever you do - don't mention the war"
Less a war and more an invasion or so Izzie thinks. Such a nasty little scheme of switch and bait.
Iz remembers ever so vividly the fireworks display that Georgie boy and co so kindly put on for us last year and then must think in contrast of their self righteous outrage and indignation when a different mob do much the same sort of thing on several trains in Spain.
It is bad enough to be senselessly killed by terrorists but then to have your death totally denied, ignored or never acknowledged - as if you never even existed is to add insult to injury. The victims of New York, Bali and Madrid will be remembered and grieved by their families and people all over the world who never knew them have heard of some of the names but who outside of Iraq remembers or commemorates the names of those who died in the bombings of Saturday 22 March 2003?
And now the stories of "The Tipton Three' released from Guantanamo Bay are slowly trickling out. Extremely scary stuff. Iz almost feels like we have entered some sort of time warp back to the fifties where everyone was afraid of the big bad communists and anyone who dared to be different got tarnished with that brush. If you are not with us you are against us.
And years later we look back in bewilderment and wonder how it ever could have happened.
Whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty' and the rest of the 'rule of law' which is supposed to be the sign of a civilized society. Or are some nations above the rules?
What happens in the future when it is China that decided to launch a 'pre-emptive strike' against Taiwan or Japan or wherever their paranoia takes them? Who ever is without sin gets to cast the first stone... which means they'll get away with it.
Once something has been done the first time, it subsequently gets easier and easier to do.
Iz just cannot help but be reminded of her favorite saying. "There is no good and evil. There is only Power and those too weak to seek it."
