An odd day for even numbers
08/04/2004 10:00 pmBeen a most peculiar and strange day. Iz is peeved because once again our auditing assignments were not collected. At 10 cents a page, so far must have spent at least 2 silver sickles on stupid printing - money that could be far better spent on capuccinos. And it's all for nothing.
Yesterday was a gorgeous sunny day and Iz was looking forward to an interesting afternoon at work with the nicest bunch of house elves. Then the theory was - would be finishing at 9pm - get home and catch the last bus to the Min at 9.45pm and then get the Min 'Knight Bus' home. The last one leaves at midnight from Monday to Thursdays so that would give Iz two hours of typing stuff. During the day time is so so difficult to get one's paws on the computers - between classes, labs and folks typing assignments - and then when you finally find a spare spot - before you know it an hour has gone and some teacher arrives wanting the room for a class.
Well - turns out that 2 of the four of us at work rang in sick so they got an agency to replace one and another elf ended up doing a double shift. Since she had already worked 7-1 in the morning, they asked if Iz would stay till 10 so that she could go at 9pm. Iz hates staying till 10pm but knows what it's like to do double shifts so agreed to stay.
That of course blew the Izzie plan out of the water. So the choice was to go to bed and hope to snatch a few hours on Thursday during the day time in the labs or to catch the second last Min bus going in and then stay the whole night. The fact that the Muggles at the maintenance desk have decided to close the labs from 4pm Easter Sunday till 9am next Wednesday morning and Iz has two assignments due the very same Wednesday and Thursday was incentive enough to stay.
Was intending to have them all finished by Easter Sunday anyway but now they need not only to be finished but printed out too.
Iz is getting ever so peeved at work. The last few weeks there has been so so many folks ringing in sick and there is no unusual bug going around. Lots of folks think that they have jobs on the side with agencies where they get paid oodles more. Apparently just about every other nursing home workers get paid more than us little elves. Something like at least 1 silver sickle more per hour and even cleaners and checkout chicks get more than us and have a lot less shit to put up with. So you can't really blame folks for trying to earn any extra pennies where they can but it's a right damn pain for the ones not taking the days off.
This particular job is perfect for studying. Iz has set shifts and they either end at 1pm or start at 3pm so it's easy to fit classes around the job. Trying to study part time while working 9-5 would be an absolute nightmare.
While Iz likes the job - even if I absolutely adored it, would be no way I could spend the rest of my life doing it as there would be no possibility of ever going on overseas holidays without getting into lots of debt and it is just so tiresome constantly counting the pennies as the price of everything - especially taxes is going up at a much faster rate than wages.
If Iz had not bought her lair when she did which is exactly six years ago now, it would be utterly out of the question now. Since then house prices have more than doubled, especially where Iz lives and living way out in the cheaper suburbs instead of within 10-15 min broomstick distance would mean having to buy a reliable car. And cars are just guaranteed gobblers of galleons. So many folks get trapped in the rat race and it's easier to get in than out of it.
So if I ever do get a Goblin job, will be utterly bedazzled and bewildered with the idea of getting about 3 -4 times as much per hour as the poor little house elves at St Mungo's closed ward.
It was most peculiar pottering off at 7am for a coffee and then going home to bed at 9am when everyone else was just opening their shops.
Anyone else noticed what pretty patterns the numbers are making this year. 2004 is a nice soft squishy number and Iz of course made sure she would have an LJ entry for 04.04 2004 and also of course for 20.04.2004. Since 2000 the Calendars have been looking rather soft and round without all those jagged odd edges.
Iz must thank the Cat for introducing her to some fascinating IT corners of Cyberia. Came in most useful for finding interesting articles to summarize for the assignment due next Wednesday.
