Izzie heard on the news today about a bomb that has killed 10 people and injured hundreds more near the Australian embassy in Jakarta. The doom and gloom these days is simply relentless. Not having a television means that the Iz does not see the worst of it but some of the stories that have been coming out since Friday and especially the photos from the new video from Beslan have been most spooky and scary indeed. The pictures of the school reminded Iz is some strange way of those photos of the abandonded schools in the town of Pripyat near Chernobyl.
There were many pictures of a small boy wearing white with his hands behind his head and he reminded Iz so much of the boy in a famous photo from the 1940's taken in the Warsaw ghetto who is among German soldiers and looks totally terrified.

The story that really got Iz was about the woman set free when the first batch of hostages was released. The hostage takers would only let people take out one child or none at all so several women were in the situation of having to go and leave other children behind. Izzie was not quite sure if the bastards made these women choose which child to take. Apparently her other child did survive but Iz can only begin to imagine how the mother and the one left behind must have felt. Izzie cannot remember her name but the girl was called Alana and the boy Alan. She was 6 and it was her first day at school and I guess the mother must have brought the boy along so that he would not be by himself at home.

Then there was a teacher who survived merely because she turned up ten minutes late to class. Those are the stories that Iz finds most moving at all. Izzie had no idea until now that the village called Beslan even existed and had no need to know. But for some strange reason, after hearing about the storming of the school and the tragic stuff up (memories of that theatre in Moscow) Iz just could not help but wondering about the fate of this girl Alana. The mother said that her daughter was screaming and crying unconsolably when she realised that her mother was leaving without her.
Then this business of the ringleader killing the three followers who obviously had not known the exact nature of their mission and did not approve of taking children at all. Iz got the impression that these killings took place in front of the hostages. If this is how these people treat their own, then they are hardly going to think twice about killing those who they consider to be their enemies, regardless of age.

But anyone who is really evil and serious about killing kids and lots of them and totally getting away with it, would be better advised to do it from the safety of the cockpit of some fighter bomber plane where you don't ever have to look your victims in the eye and no one from the media will bother coming to spy on your nefarious activities.

planes can crash...

The safest way to kill kids is to sit in your office (bunker / villa / cave / residence) and order your loyal (brainwashed / enthusiastic / respectful) employees to do the job...

Here's the followup on Zalina's story. At least a bit of good news among all of it.
