It's been a glorious day in Dursleyville. Perfect for picnicking and general lounging about but certainly NOT for gardening.
Iz got up at 9 or so and promptly went for another snooze outside in the garden under the orange tree. But it was not for too long as there were other exciting things on the Izzie agenda like a picnic in the Governer General's Gardens which are only open to the mob and common rabble once a week between 12 and 2pm on Tuesdays. Since the Iz is normally working at that time, holidays is really only the only opportunity to go there and mooch about. Iz is especially fond of sitting on the park bench near the 170 year old olive tree which is gorgeously gnarled and would not look out of place on the set of "The Nightmare Before Christmas"

The Mansions were actually open on Sunday which is most rare indeed. The excuse was to show off the new ballroom to the poor suckers who actually have to pay for it. It's quite ridiculous to have such a gorgeous place with its massive grounds just for one person and their partner and 20 assorted house elves and gardners. Disgustingly decadent in fact. Everywhere you go there are portraits of Her Royal Highness and her disgusting husband. Queen Elizabeth used to be stunningly beautiful in those pictures from the 50's and then she went off and married that repulsive lump of slime and destroyed the family gene pool forever. Iz doesn't give a stuff about the Royals. She only knows it would be worse being one of them than living in a goldfish bowl. Iz guesses that they are sort of the modern version of human sacrifices or scapegoats but instead of getting literally killed they just get spied on and dissected into virtual pieces. Folks really seem to need an object for their Schadenfreude.

But back to those pompous people. Maybe it's just as well they have silly anachronistic positions like Governer Generals - all SEVEN of them (or maybe Iz has forgot a few)because if he wasn't living in his palace it would have been bulldozed years ago with tons of hideous office blocks in its place. And Dursleyville is rather famous for the ugliness of its office blocks. Nowhere near the same league as the East Germans and other followers of the Soviet style, but monstrous carbuncles nevertheless.

So we finally got to finish "Illusions" while sitting under a plane tree near a waterfall with ducks for company. Simply gorgeous. Iz then decided to check to see what was on her favorite radio station. Lucky we did check. Had totally forgotten all about the interview with some Peter Ceresini or something like that who has written a biography about Adolf Eichman. It was simply fascinating. Iz will post the link to the transcript when it appears later in the week.
When one is a victim of a crime, it can be so often a case of bad luck - being in the wrong place at the wrong time. But the perpetrators on the other hand have more choice. After lots of seemingly insignificant decisions, they end up somewhere at the bottom of the slippery slope. Iz is always fascinated by such people and how they justify their behaviour to themselves and to others. I guess it's alway interesting to see the process of absolute power slowly and inevitable exerting its evil influence on its willing victims. From Anu Singh to Adold Eichmann (and nastiest of all - Rudolf Hoess) Iz finds these Snakes in Suits most intriguing indeed.

After getting 30 minutes longer than expected before being expelled from the Garden of Eden, next stop was the bus to the beach with a coffee stop on the way. Izzie's Preciousssss at work has died and we needs to find out when the funeral is. Was so so lucky that we dropped by work on Sunday on the way to the city. She had looked pretty sick just before Iz went on holidays and with the visitors and all, did not get to see her Wednesday as planned.
The poor thing definitely looked like she was on her last legs - all thin and bony and not the Gollumish little dear that she usually was. Iz knew that this would be the last time and sure enough, one of the nice house elves must have called by Izzie's place on the way home to leave a note to say she had died on Sunday.
Must go looking for some of the Izzie LJ musings about the antics of our Preciousss.

Well. Nothing in today's paper. Maybe tomorrow. After that we pottered off to the beach for an absolutely gorgeous sunset with the clouds coloured bright red afterwards. Tomorrow is supposed to be raining. Pity. Since Iz has decided to be a good goblin and not skip Cornelius's class on Thursday evening, will have to do our moon watching on Wednesday and Friday instead of the proper official full moon on Thursday. Of course, the Iz could always get up extra early on Thursday morning to watch the moon setting.

Which "Illusions" book were you reading? Richard Bach's? Or another one?

Is there another one? Iz cannot imagine it being anywhere as good. Just goes to show that interesting beings appear even in such a cultural wasteland as the 1970's.

Just gotta love a guy who says things like
"The Original Sin is to limit the Iz. Don't."(Bad bad serpent. Just couldn't resist that little tweek)

Ah!

I love that book! And all it's little messages. I knew there was another level the two of us agreed on besides green and Slytherins ;)
