A fistful of sickles
15/02/2005 11:49 pmIzzie slinks in for her nasty netcafe Tuesday top up. Started the week with doomy gloomy thoughts of having only 6 silver sickles to spare which would mean only 3 hours of online time until next Tuesday (not including libraries and stuff) or the prospect of indulging and buying a big fat batch of 25 hours for 50 silver sickles after pay day tomorrow. (That's the minimum number of hours you've got to get if you want to get the $$2 rate on any day other than Tuesdays)
So yesterday had yet another crappy nine hour shift. But the Izzie was not peeved for the simple reason that it was an icky sticky disgustingly yucky day with a maximum of 38 celsius. And after 12 am the Iz was mainly in the new airconditioned wing of the building. If the Iz had finished at 1pm she would have done absolutely nothing at all with the day and she has no airconditioning in the lair so it was not wasted at all staying at work.
So, today's plans were not too ambitious. After brekkie and stuff, would potter off to the Ministry's Kirribili Cafe for a coffee and to catch up on lots of papers. Then would pop into the computer shop upstairs in a little corner of the University book shop to drool at the merchandise and get price lists. Turns out that there are more than just the two shops in the city that are authorised Apple retailers.
So, the Iz got the lists and discovers that their prices are generally between $$200-$$250 cheaper than the Digilife mob. Iz still has her Ministry ID and hopes that the minor detail of having completed her degree won't invalidate her entitlement to student discounts ;)
Next stop was the ATM to confirm that as Izzie suspected, she did indeed have the princely sum of $$1.55 in her Gringotts Vault. (Izzie is still keeping her new year's resolution to be a good goblin and not just account for every single sickle spent but also to be always up to date with the state of the vault. Putting payslips in the Green Goblin Book together with ATM withdrawal slips (instead of with tax stuff) has proved to aid this process enormously)
Then we would go check in the secondhand book store if the book the Iz had left on consignment had sold before finally pottering off to the computer labs to work on that stupid resume. That's the only thing left to do there apart from playing with Dreamweaver and Photoshop since they disabled the Izzie portkey to Cyberia.
So the Iz was most delighted indeed to see not a single copy of this nasty book on the shelf - unlike the 8 that were there last time the Izzie was hoping for some quick cash. So after they grabbed their fat 25% commission, the Iz was left with just under $$45. Can't complain really since we paid $$55 for this book in the very same shop and then got to keep $$45 out of the 60 that we asked for. So Iz had the use of this text book for the term and was only $$10 out of pocket.
But this big fat forty meant two things for the Izzie - a nice juicy Tuesday Top up of rather more than 3 hours and a bottle for the evening.
The local bottle shop is a crappy place and just about never has anything both decent and affordable. The Iz could have paid $$10 for a bottle of Jacobs Creek Shiraz Cabernet but can so often get it for $$7 on sale that she didn't bother. Instead - wanted something nice and cold. Got a Seaview Sparkling Shiraz for $$9.50
Would have been better off getting some cheap and nasty cask. While their white bubblies are very nice, this stuff to put it politely had rather a barnyard aroma and did not taste that much better. One would expect to get this sort of crap for $$6-7 and certainly not $$9.50.
Well - at least we had lots of crisp and crunchy Ryvitas to munch with it. Tasty little buggers and disgustingly healthy too. Izzie adores Ryvitas. Unlike bread, there's never any worry they will go stale but bestest of all, there is no MSG, sugar, soya protein isolate, palm oil or the other dodgy muck that finds its way into the usual ingredients list of crispbreads or crackers of any sort.
So, after all that was time to potter off back to the lair for the fourth shower of the day and to get ready for work at 5pm. Turned out that the temperature got to a rather nasty 42 today some time around 4pm it peaked but even so it was infinitely better than yesterday as it was windy and nowhere near as humid. Lucky the weather will be a lot cooler and less humid when the Iz finally gets her usual Thursday and Friday off this week.
Lucky we got a late shift again tomorrow because the Iz suspects she won't be getting that much sleeping done tonight with the temperature at midnight still around 22 or such.

Date: 2005-02-15 04:56 pm (UTC)I need to apologise, I didn't realise you'd posted on my journal until today (I know, I know, it's now 7 months later, what can I say, I'm technologically clueless? Oops).
In answer to your questions:
1) Yes, I saw the Scared Wierdies in Edinburgh, about 7 years ago (we moved to California at the end of 1998 and returned to the UK in Oct 2004), sat on the front row and had a "love" song (in that scared wierdy style) sang to me. We bought Macadamia and inspite of the "Come to Australia, (You Might Accidentally Get Killed", what a masterplan of the Australian Tourist Board that was!) have decided to apply for a permanent resident visa to Australia. We are hoping to find out sooner rather than later, but as with all immigration authorities, it could be this week, it could be next year.
I am also an enormous DAAS fan, again having gone drinking with them (well, mainly Richard and Tim, if I'm honest) in Edinburgh, London and those fantastic metropolisis of Stevenage, Aylesbury and Birmingham. I was also in the audience the fateful night in Edinburgh when they decided to seriously piss off Greg Proops (always a good thing). Tim gave me some artwork from their Santa/Satan tour, so my then boyfriend (now hubby) and I drove around North London with a 6' square painted naked devil. Unfortunately, it started to break up (it was attached to the roof of the car), so we ended up ditching it in a skip in North London one night. We still have the second piece of artwork at my parents and if we get our visa, it is coming to Aus with us.
2) As you commented,I am also a huge U2 fan, unfortunately, current finances dictated that I couldn't get tickets for this summer's shows, but who knows, if they announce a third show in Dublin, after the end of Feb, we should have enough cash for 2 tickets (hurray)
3) Yes, I am a Harry Potter fan and am sitting on the edge of my seat impatiently waiting for the Half Blood Prince.
Anyway, despite being hopelessly late with a response, please may I friend you?

Scared Weird little Izzie
Oh no need to apologise (Don't make a habit of it or John Howard will NEVER EVER let you in to the Land of the Long Brown Nose)
This curious serpent one day wanted to find out about the other far and few between wacky creatures who had the weirdies in their interest list and never imagined that any of them would have so many interests in common with the Izzie.
The Iz got a CD signed by the evil twosome at the concert - it has a picture of them sitting on a sofa knitting in a very Dursleyish looking lounge room. We also have a tape from one of the Edinburgh concerts
Iz recently went to a FREE scaredies concert and it was wickely wonderful as ever - especially the Eminem version of Walzing Matilda (Iz detests rap but this was just so so cool - like all those wonderul versions they do of Prince's Kiss)
Izzie's favorite is probably "Volvo Man" "The Condom Song" and the seriously smutty one about the Christmas Dinner with the relatives.
Have heard of the Doug Anthony mob but know nothing about them and probably would not be interested.
Iz once did see U2 live in Dublin (and another time just sat outside because she was such a poor little house elf - but it was still most enjoyable) That was way way back in 84 and as far as the Izzie is concerned, Dublin is THE place to see them. Amazing how they are still going after all these years. Did see them in Oz when they came out in 1998 - it was February 17th to be exact. Once again Iz sat outside because she could not justify paying an utterly outrageous 150 silver sickles. But around about 10.30pm the security guards felt sorry for the sad folks outside on the steps glimpsing through the small windows of the fire exits and let us in FREE!!! And the show did not finish until midnight! Iz never ever imagined that that sort of thing would happen at a concert.
Oh and feel free to friend the Iz. A warning - this serpent has a terrible tendency to talk in riddles but the meaning should not be too obscure to any Potter fans out there.
DAAS & the Scaredies
Date: 2005-02-16 08:04 am (UTC)A free Scaredies concert? Lucky, lucky Izzie, is all I can say.
Thank you for letting me friend you, don't worry about the riddles, it'll keep the rest of my friends guessing.
Happy Wednesday.
