The Big Cheese
28/06/2005 12:19 amThe Izzie has been very cranky and grumpy of late. Seems just the littlest things trigger us off. It's so bad that we are nearly tempted to take a peek in the mirror to see if there is a lightening shaped scar hiding under all those curls. Since about Wednesday 15th been having almost constant headaches. These are more frequent in the presence of Dolores or even merely thinking about her. Stupid thing to do, we know but we almost cannot help it.
Thursday and Friday were particularly bad. Our big bag of silver sickles arriving 24 hours late certainly did not help. Lucky the bank has a policy of 3 strikes and you are out. They tried twice to debit our mortgage repayments and the required funds of course were not there. Third time lucky. So it turned out that our particularly pissy pay this fortnight was attributable mainly not to outrageous goblin fees for bouncy accounts but to not getting one of our usual Saturday shifts and two pissy little four hour ones on Sundays.
Both Saturday and Sunday – was starting work at 7am. Got up at 5.30 on both days with a severe case of the grumps which was not helped by one very yappie dog. In spite of having one of these new stupid little 7-11am morning shifts and having all the intentions in the world to potter off to Angel's Cafe and the weekend markets after coming home, changing and showering and all that, it was just such a grey miserable day and was in such an irritable Izzie pity party mood that we decided it was not worth bothering and we would just spend the afternoon in bed instead. And that's exactly what we did.
Today was the first morning since Wednesday 22nd where we did not waking up feeling like zapping every living thing in sight. Finished work at 1pm without feeling like a limp and wet dishrag. Was such a gorgeous sunny day, decided it was just perfect for visiting our favorite lunatic asylum and finally buying that big fat juicy wheel of cheese that we should have got on Thursday if those guttersnipes had had the manners to pay us on time.
Did not bring the Preciousss for a big day out on Thursday which is our usual day for visiting the Angel's Waffle Cafe and getting our weekly fix of ipod munchies and other downloads at something quicker than snail mail speed. Carting around 3 kilos of computer plus nearly 4 kilos of cheese is not exactly Izzie's idea of a fun day out.
The Italian delicatessen which is the only place that has this stuff is only open until 12pm on Saturdays so that was not a possibility. So Izzie had planned to get those downloads instead and to also visit the markets for our weekly rations of greens. But the map is not the territory. Never got any further than curled up under the quilt that day. The weather got much much nicer since then which is when we had the inspired idea to get our cheese enroute to the lunatic asylum for an afternoon lounging about reading and squiggling and sunning those ickle green Izzie scales.
Was certainly not going to waste it indoors in some netcafe downloading stuff that can wait until Thursday's rain.
So now Izzie is the proud possessor of one very large 4 kilo wheel of Parmesan cheese and has done her bit for the economy of the Shire. Izzie's favorite source of the stuff is the mountains of Switzerland but New Zealand makes some damned good stuff and usually for a lot lot more than the ridiculous price of $$9 per kilo. Should have got some Gran Padano for twice that price just to compare.
Really got to make the most of our temporary residence at the ma's place house and dog sitting. Not only do we need only one bus to get to our favorite locations but with a ten minute walk to and from the bus stop near the river (and bus zone boundary) rather than two minutes up the end of the street, we get to pay two silver sickles for a fare that would cost Izzie three and an extra 15 minutes travel and waiting for connecting bus times if travelling from our usual residence.
So finishing work at 1pm and then pottering off home to jump in the shower tub and stuff before heading off to get the 2.30pm bus is perfectly possible without any rushing at all. Wouldn't care for doing it the other way around though. Something about working in the afternoon – even if only for 4-5 hours which means you are clock watching all morning and cannot really get too relaxed.
It's nice to have a mix of both mornings and evenings. That way we get both our weekly fix of morning snoozies and afternoon adventures. Tomorrow is big snoozies and lounge lizard day. It's nice to have the occasional lie in.
