Today, the Izzie was listening to one of her favorite radio programs and was rather astonished to hear a certain presenter appearing whose usual spot is on in the afternoon. Turns out that he was being interviewed as he has written a new book. Izzie had always thought of him as being a pleasant and polite but not particularly interesting presenter. Big big mistake. This was one of the most fascinating and saddest stories that Izzie has heard in a long long time.
He always felt a bit different and even asked his parents if he was adopted and they denied it. But his sister who was also adopted was told so and knew her original name and everything.

It was when he was nine or so and some snarky Draco Malfoy sort called him “a little Nazi bastard” that he started on the quest to find his birth family. He did not find out until he was 48 years old.
But the really really sad thing was how patterns repeat themselves. His girlfriend got pregnant and they both wanted to keep the baby but the nuns had other ideas. But she was in Ireland and he was in New Zealand at the time so the nuns had the last word. His girlfriend tried to escape so that they would not take the baby but the nuns caught her and took the baby anyway.

Heard so many horror stories from the Magdalene Laundrettes lately and this is yet another. So many kids were snatched from their mothers – with or without consent and given up for adoption and inherited the usual hangups so common with adopted children. There is something strange about the way human brains are programmed. No matter if their mother turns out to be a 13 year old heroin addict or rape victim or someone totally incapable of raising a child, the adopted out child always seems to believe that their mother never loved them and got rid of them because they were not good enough. Nearly all the adopted people that Izzie knows seem to have this desire to prove themselves and often become incredibly high achievers. But no matter what they do, they never seem satisfied as they vainly try to prove their worth to impossibly idealized biological parents.

And thanks to the magic of modern technology, you don't have to take Izzie's word for it but can hear this astonishing story for yourself first hand

(PS Also check out Kathy's story from Friday 1st July. That is truly scary)

Strange. Tuesday night on the radio was a fascinating story about the history of the London Underground. (There's a link to audio somewhere but it's not available as mp3) Amazing to think that there used to be steam trains. They also mentioned the really bad fire at King's Cross - some time in the '90s can't remember what year but think it was around Christmas time. Also mention made of the ever present threat of terrorism and the fact that it simply is not possible to bomb proof a network of such a size without bringing the whole city to a stand still. Is just something they have to live with. And seems, just like Madrid - which at this stage had a much higher death toll - they have had to deal with local terrorists for years and years whether they be ETA or IRA. But this new breed are infinitely more vicious and cunning too. Everyone was so busy concentrating on the G8 summit security.
Izzie had no idea anything had happened and associated all talk about London with the successful Olympic bid. But there was something about the post in Nichers' journal that seemed sad rather than jubilant. And now everywhere is full of the news. Izzie was most impressed with Ken Livingstone - far more than GWB and that stinking lying rodent of a prime miniature we have here who just had to use such a tragic event to get up on his miserable little soap box and try to score points.
Izzie has a brother who lives in London. But he was born with a steering wheel in his hand and probably has never darkened the door of a tube station. But there are lots of other folks out there who are not so lucky. Such a sad ending to what should have been a week of celebrations.
