Possessing the Preciousss
19/07/2005 06:41 pmNow that Izzie has finally finished a certain book, figures it is now safe to slink about in Cyberia without the fear of encountering spoilers as happened last time. Not only did Izzie encounter some but unintentionally posted one by linking to a particularly fascinating essay about our hero – dearest Dolores. Did not want to find ourselves in such a situation again so stayed offline until finding out first hand just what happened.
Unlike those folks who had to wait until midnight to get their paws on the Preciousss, us folks in the land of Woz got an extra few hours snoozies until 7.01 am.
But that did not stop some die hard Potterheads from slinking about some nasty shopping centre book store at 9pm the previous evening – ie 10 hours before the official release. (And Izzie thought that she was obsessed!)
And it's not like it was neecssary as there was plenty of copies for everyone and after staying up all night, the poor critters would be too zonked to read.
Unlike last time, the Izzie was not there on the dot ready to grab the Preciousss Prince at 7am for the simple reason that the bus services on Saturday mornings are no longer what they used to be and none of them would get us to any bookshop anywhere for that ungodly hour. Best we could do was 7.30am or so.
But basically, we had a decision to make – could find the bookstore with the biggest party – which turned out to be at a nasty soulless shopping centre or we could choose a book shop nearest to the place where we intended to start reading it. Now that Izzie no longer gets bus fares at student prices – the option of going to the city and then later taking the train to St Brutus before finally setting off for sunset at Cottesloe Beach (like we did last time) would turn out to be rather expensive indeed.
So, the Izzie figures – we will arrive at the bookstore for 7.30 or so, pick up the Preciousss, after lurking to see what cool costumes other Potterholics were dressed up in, would then get our munchies at the supermarket before doing a coffee crawl reading the Saturday papers and stuff. St Brutus does not open its doors before 10am and that was the place that Izzie had specially reserved for taking our first peek – just like last time.
So, got ourselves dressed up as pink and fluffy as it is possible to be (figured that Dolores would be not making much of an appearance in the newest book so this would be our last chance to honour her memory) and duly turns up at the bookstore and says “Hem. Hem. I would like my copy of the Half Blood Prince please (producing all necessary documentation of course- it being a prepaid copy)
But what so so upset the Izzie – either no one but shop assistants dressed up or they had already been and gone at 7am – Izzie did win a T shirt for having a cool costume but was devastated to realize that NO ONE in either bookstore realized just who the Izzie was! Turned out that none of them had read the fifth book! Izzie was particularly peeved at the suggestion “Aunt Petunia”
Ought to make the bastards write lines “I must read book five”
A cloudy day was predicted but it turned out to be gloriously sunny for the whole day which truly was delightful.
Unlike last time when we arrived at our favorite ex lunatic asylum just after midday and had a wine and cheese picnic to celebrate before discovering the goings on at Number 4 Privet Drive, figured that 10.30am would be just a bit early for a swig of Snape's Great Party Potion and just might make the Izzie a bit too doozie. So saved the bottlies for midday which got postponed to 2pm before finally getting around to a late lunch at 3.30 or so. Oh and we also got the stamp of approval from the nice folks in the museum – after buying two of their postcards as bookmarks. They were quite touched to hear that the Izzie waited specially to turn up at their place to read the book and that it is one of our most important sacred sites.
So the Izzie sat in the sunshine reading all day until closing time. We then sat outside the gates watching the sunset before pottering off for a coffee crawl. At that stage – had gotten about half way through the book. Was not speed reading and resorted to the dreadful habit of constantly rechecking things from previous chapters.
Will save our musings for another post protected by various enchantments to protect unsuspecting muggles from accidental discoveries of plot points and stuff. Suffice to say that on reading the first two chapters which are so very very different in style to the usual writings of the Great White Witch, was stricken by an irrational fear that we'd landed ourselves a fake. But reassurance was not long coming. And we can say no more without fear of inadvertently revcaling some Secret Serpent Business.

Won-Won!
And it was as predicted....Dd d'd.
More mysteries....before you read others' essays, who do you think RAB is, and what is going on there with Sevvie's loyalties? :-)
Would like to hear. My initial thoughts have been unfortunately corrupted by reading others' essays, and I can't quite remember what I thought in the first place - though I'm pretty sure of the reasons for the conclusions I drew about Snape.
And they're all bloody half-bloods....fascinating, no?
