Izzie has been a good little serpent and not spent all day out on the town like we used to on Fridays. Getting up early for the Friday morning meeting at 7.15 am means that by about 2-3ish, the Izzie is getting a bit snoozie. Not helped by staying up till 12.30 the night before. Dodo dialup played cranky and would not let us online. Some crap about failed authentication. Knew that we could not possibly have used up 40 hours since topping up two weeks ago. Should have given up after 3 attempts or so as each one costs a local phone call. But we had certain serpent business to attend to that could not wait another day ;)
Just been balancing the books and doing the laundry. Not much fun when you got to run upstairs to check the bath tub and bail out the odd bucket or two onto the garden. Since the tap that had blown its stack has not been fixed yet (Izzie has not even told the pa about it yet) we only turn on the mains when absolutely necessary. But you cannot get away with ten minutes or so when running a washing machine.
Thursday was an icky sticky day. Would have been quite happy to have a bit of a snooze in but had arranged to meet the Potions Mistress in her Fremantle dungeons around 11am.
She brews up cauldrons of very delicious soap and Iz first met her down at a craft fair in Bridgetown for Halloween 2004. Met her a couple of times at the annual craft fair at our favorite lunatic asylum. She asked if the Izzie could help her with paperwork and stuff. Iz came up with the idea - since she has only recently started her business and does not have spare cash for decadent luxuries like bean counters, and the Izzie has her bit of paper (exactly a year ago - hard to believe) but no experience at all, figures that if we offer to do it free of charge then we both might benefit from the arrangement.
Decided to make January 1st 2006 as change over date but we needed various opening balances for that date before we could start entering stuff using the bean counting software. By the end of January, she had still not come up with the numbers so the Izzie said that it was pointless dropping by every week since we could not do anything without them. This Thursday, she did finally have all the receipts and stuff sorted in envelopes - month by month going back to the beginning of 2005. Iz figures - might be just as easy to start again from the very very beginning and to pick a corresponding date. At least that way, we could get started straight away with the stack of yellow envelopes with receipts and stuff and start with an opening bank balance of zero until we got the actual figure. At least that way, there would be infinitely less opening balances to worry about since nothing had been bought or made yet at that stage.
It was so so funny. On the one hand, amazing how quickly you forget stuff but then also amazing how quickly it comes back. Had not played around with this particular software package (MYOB) since early 2002. Took just under two hours or so to get most of March in the box. All the stuff other than sales and purchases of some raw materials since that's in another book which she did not have at the time.
So, while it's kind of tedious and plodding - it's good to give those old grey cells a bit of exercise. So we suggested that there's no need at all to be there to do this stuff. All we need is a couple of envelopes and we just bring them back and pick up new ones and then send the odd owl to enquire about receipts that we are unsure about. Not everyone writes on their invoices what exactly they were for - particularly annoying are supermarket or post office receipts which are often printed on nasty thermal paper which fades away to almost blank after not too long at all.
The weather took a turn for the better later in the afternoon and we lurked in our usual haunts. The Juicy Beetroot was even more tasty than usual. Will really have to find some way of stealing their recipes. There's simply too many nice places in Fremantle for munchies which is more than can be said for downtown Dursleyville.
Did intend to make a detour today to the Greek deli where they sell all sorts of luscious things loose and much cheaper than in the supermarkets - if you can even get them at all. Brown basmati rice and cumin seeds are top of the list. But in the end, this lazy serpent went instead to the Indian restaurant on the jetty and will save making spicy potatoes for another day.
