An old fart goes pottering
01/09/2006 09:49 pmIt was a most strange day. Had so many grand plans yesterday. Could not quite decide whether to go back to Freo today. Friday is markets day and we are so suffering from withdrawal symptoms due to lack of our favorite evil green weed. Then there's downtown Dursleyville and the gorgeous hill near the parliament and some very spooky old buildings and gnarled monstrous Moreton Bay fig trees. A most magical place indeed. But all of these - as well as our best of intentions to get up early and pay a visit to the usual public speaking group on Friday morning were all based on the assumption that it would be a nice sunny day. But it wasn't. All wet and miserable.
After a late night lurking online, did not bother getting up until 11am. Was up between 9-10 listening to a radio show and doing a bit more tidying but soon slinked back to the serpent sack.
Figured that such a grey day would be the perfect excuse to board a quick flight with South Pacific Airways. (slithery good fun it was too but ever so corny. Unfortunately, it was not quite bad enough to be good but there were some serpent giggles)
The other things on our list of things to do was to visit the Vultures at the tax office to hand in our tax return which we only signed off on yesterday. Due to unusual circumstances, will not be able to observe the usual ritual of handing it on on 31 October which is the last day before the buggers start getting snarky and handing out fines for lateness
Yesterday was listening to a talkback show about tourism in Australia and one woman rang in to say that she has a great time going to YHA youth hostels. They are cheap and cheerful and perfect for people on a budget. And she's a mere 65. That certainly got the green cells ticking over. Had never even considered this as an option - assuming it was only for under 26s and not old farts like Izzie. So slinked down to the local hostel not too far from the cinema and got ourselves an annual pass. It costs 52 silver sickles for oldies and only 19 for under 26s which is reasonable as they are usually poorer than us old folks.
Used to stay in these hostels very often on our grand trips around Germany when we used to live there and most of them were very reasonably priced and perfectly located for the less mobile serpent. One of the most unusual was in Wittenberge which was right next to the church where Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the doors. One very pretty wooden one in Meiringen Switzerland - had all to ourselves. Was only two of us and no one else at all. It was truly wonderful and only a short walk to the Sherlock Holmes museum.
Was most delighted with such last minute inspiration as accomodation in Europe is otherwise so so expensive.
Didn't get around to visiting the vultures. Next thing on the list will be making photocopies of various important documents. Still not started on that will. Did buy the booklet but that's as far as we ever got.
