The Ministry of Silly Hats

These are just gorgeousss. Scary how hijabs are also not flavour of the month over here too. Whether it's England or Oz, the papers and the politicians love to print stories about strange women's headgear. "Ban the veil" was the headline in today's local paper.
Funny - got off at the station yesterday and seen three women wearing black veils and stuff. Automatically assumed they were Muslim. In fact, they were three nuns. Funny - ten years ago - would have been the other way around.
Frankly we don't give a damn what they wear as long as they don't demand that we wear it too.

As for the veils - most of them actually look nice except those awful Afghani style burqas where you can probably hardly even breathe and can only see straight ahead. And they must be hot as hell. But the sorts of things the majority of mainstream Malaysians and Indonesians wear are quite cool actually. But the burqa business - the time the Izzie was over in Malaysia - some of them wore the whole head to toe thing and whether or not it is intended - it really gives the impression - keep away from me. Not just for men but women too. And most folks get the message and do just that. Not exactly conducive to communication.
As some one who used to dress in lots of baggy black, the Iz can relate to the whole thing of not wanting to play the Sex Goddess game but surely the whole point of dressing 'modestly' is to just be part of the crowd and not draw excessive attention to yourself. So in a country like England or Oz, a simple white or black veil may not stand out but an Afghani, Saudi or Iranian style burqa most definitely would. As far as Izzie is concerned, would be a damned good idea for the men to wear them too. This assumption that women should bear sole responsibility for men's lack of will power to resist temptation is insulting to both men and women and ignores the fact that girls like looking at hunks too.
So, Izzie doesn't care what they wear but does believe that wearing veils that cover one's face (as opposed to hair only) should not be allowed to be worn for passport and other official documentation photos (The bastards in the post office would not even let Izzie wear our green hat. Or rather - one lady at the counter did until a Pakistani man (of all people) who also worked there told her that hats and head coverings in general were not acceptable for driver's licence photos)
Oh - and the scary thing is - some crazy critters would like to make them compulsory
