The Moon in June

Been absolutely glorious weather here since Wednesday afternoon. One happy serpent indeed. So much moon watching this year has been marred by clouds or other disturbances
It was especially delightful to be sipping coffee outside on the Capuccino Strip by the light of the big fat almost full moon.
Was more of the same on Friday morning. Out and about at 6.30 in the morning and watched the critter most of the time on the bus until it got a bit yellower and finally disappeared on the horizon just after 7am
After our Friday meeting finished around 8.30, next stop was the bus to Fremantle. This is not usual for Izzie who generally spends those two hours slinking about in the gorgeous parks next door. But it's not every week that the Heritage Festival is on. Friday's activity was a public tour of some of the gorgeous buildings of the Notre Dame University. Most of them are old hotels, bars, offices and warehouses converted into lecture halls and classrooms. They even have their own courtroom which dates from the late 1890s or so and just around the corner from the very gorgeous Shipwreck Galleries with all those bits of the Batavia
There are also many courtyards and gardens with pretty old red brick paving and plane trees. And Izzie is most partial to plane trees indeed. So so wants one for our garden but never seen them as babies and have had no luck yet with just burying the seeds. Paying $100 for a tree just a bit taller than Izzie - that doesn't even produce anything munchable is just out of the question
The original plan was to go to the walking tour on Wednesday and the Darksuckers lecture at 10.30 am on Friday but then had the bright idea of switching that one to the alternative time on Sunday and lurking about the Lair on Wednesday doing things in the garden. Most lucky indeed since the weather was so much better yesterday
Spent the afternoon after the tour in the gorgeous gardens of St Brutus squiggling letters, reading and taking our very first peek at a most intriguing deck of Devil's Picture Cards - the ones that arrived on Thursday. It's called Tarot of the Sephiroth and seems to be a mixture of quirky Qabbalah, Egyptian gods and a veritable menagerie of serpents and ibises. And an empress with a most uncanny resemblance to Julia Gillard is most spooky indeed.
But the one thing that makes this deck different is that the cards are all linked to the 22 paths in the Qabbalah Tree and obligingly have bits of circles in various corners that make each card sort of part of a jigsaw forming this infamous image. (would be more interested if it wasn't so damned ugly)
Chakras are just so much prettier. We guess some one's already done a deck with those. But the constant appearance of spheres and circles (and especially serpents) in some many apparently disparate traditions is most intriguing indeed.
Izzie rather likes the idea of a coiled coil in a 3 dimensional spiral (sort of like a cone) - fabulously fractal but not sure if anyone has snatched that one yet except the Grand Old Designer with those cute and curly dna strands
Even Feng shui has got snakies in it. But more of that later.
Left the gorgeous gardens of the lunatic asylum just before 5pm in order to be at the top of Memorial Hill well before sunset. Not having seen the newspapers, would need to be guessing the time of moonrise and being around 4.30 the day before and Full Moon that day - 5.20 -5.30 would be a reasonable guess
It was simply gorgeous up there. A crisp and crunchy evening with not a single cloud to spoil the view. Got to thinking that this was our first full moon up there for the year since all previous attempts involved gate crashers or lots of lousy weather
There was the usual busload of tourists up there all busy clicking the sunset with their two minutes allotted time and not one around left to notice when the moon popped up five mins later. It looked especially gorgeous with so much sky still all bright orange and red.
Stayed lurking until shortly after 6pm. So nice to have a proper moonrise picnic there after such a long long absence. Got some water crackers, a round of Jindi brie and Ingoldby cabernet for the occasion. Only real good stuff this time.
More of the same when returning to the Lair some time around 8pm but then a sudden crash. Got so snoozie and so suddenly. Was curled up in the serpent sack by 9pm and not even a peek in Cyberia as originally intended
Normally Izzie returns home around 2ish after Friday morning's early start and will be doing so next week. But our first proper full moon picnic of the year was too special an occasion to miss for such minor considerations as mere tiredness.
