Bloomin' Marvelous
06/09/2007 09:43 pmIt was a nice bright sunny day forecast and just knew it was going to be good when peeking out the window at 4 in the morning and seeing 3 pretty stars all in a row. Three little critters that the Izzie has missed for the last few months. So that's where Orion has been hiding - doing the day shift. But they'll be back by November at night time. So we hope. Can't quite recall where that Stars and Planets book is hiding.
Got up properly at 9am followed by a slink outside in the sunshine. Sat under the orange tree with a cup of coffee and got high on the gorgeous aroma of orange blossoms
Was a bit miffed by the interruption to our routine of the stupid annual fire safety lecture at work - in spite of being the Izzie's day off. Plonk in the middle of a glorious sunny day from 1 to 2pm so the usual visit to Fremantle was not really sensible. Could have simply not bothered going but they can be nasty vindictive little critters at work.
So decided to take the opportunity to go to the wildflower festival which for the first time has been extended for the whole month of September rather than just the very last week. There's also some very interesting creature features and a bit of a birthday celebration for the "Patron Saint" of all weed lovers
Got there around 5pm after a few minor deviations.
In the old days the bus at the end of the street would go all the way to Kings Park which is the location of all these lovely weeds. It's a very very large park on a hill overlooking the city and river. Most of it is bushland but some is landscaped full of the obligatory war memorials. Australians are just totally obsessed with war memorials and in the last eleven years worshipping the war dead has become almost a national religion
Was getting ever so nostalgic for those old days of the 33 bus. On the winter side of the equinoxes, used to often catch the first bus up there to watch the sunrise which is a truly magical experience. But when you have to get two buses like now - is no point because by the time you've waited for the second bus, the sun is already up defeating the whole purpose of the ritual
Turned out to be a blessing in disguise, this diversion to the usual Thursday plans. Will have to make it our business to visit the park at least once a week during September because without a car to go cruising around the countryside it is the most convenient location to see all the gorgeous flowers in bloom - especially as the nice folks in the botanical gardens have also planted all sorts of specimens from north and south - plants that don't usually grow in this neck of the woods.
There are a few kangaroo paws, grevilleas and banksias in this serpent's garden but nothing like the spectacular range and variety - acres and acres of the pretty critters in the park
Such a lovely time of year. Sunny but not too hot and lots of bright colour and buzzing birds everywhere
