Lazy Izzie has been lurking in the garden this morning while glued to the radio. Making the most of a reasonably cool morning before the mercury reaches a sizzling 36 some time this afternoon and more of the same tomorrow

There's a bunch of interesting creatures lurking lately. Yesterday found the cutest little lizard in a bucket. Most lizards of the Lair are skinny little weeds - slinky and thin, fast on their feet and not much bigger than worms. But this one was as thick as a thumb with scaly skin and a very pretty pattern on its back too.

And then there was an itsie bitsie baby pigeon perching on a rather large globe artichoke leaf. Just sat there for ages watching the world go by. Today the little critter was lurking around the brick wall of the barbecue and had company. Scraggly weedy looking little things the pair of them. Now and again their ma would appear with munchies for the babies before they eventually flew off and joined her back at base near those artichokes

The tomato plants now have little green fruits on them but none of the seedlings survived our four day absence down south. Will be a bit of a nightmare trying to keep everything alive over the next few days of this heatwave
So so curious to know what inbuilt bits of trickery seeds have got to know when to raise their little leaves
Izzie puts all our kitchen waste into a big sort of compost heap under the shade of the orange tree or else digs it into the ground - especially things like avocado stones
They all just seemed to disappear without trace but noticed on Monday after 4 days absence that out of nowhere, 4 avocado seedlings had suddenly appeared and most of them in places where they won't be able to stay.

This place is a wasteland compared to the lush greenness of Bridgetown and its beautiful red clay soils. But the straw, hay and lupin mulch and stuff is slowly enriching the sad dry sandy soil and when we get our paws on some worms and put them in those recently acquired styrofoam boxes, then the greening of the Lair should start making serious progress

Decided that no more proper seeds will be going out straight into the soil. Every single one of the fluffy teddy bear and red sunflower seeds got snatched by birds or snails. The only stuff that grows successfully is the really cheap stuff got in the grocery store like broad beans, alfalfa, mustard and the odd chickpea or two.

Well. Is time to slink off for a quick serpent snooze. The 3 weeks of decadence is over and it's back to work since yesterday. Afternoons for 3 days so it's nice to get to sleep in
