izmeina: a big eared American eagle listening to everything (conspiracy)

One of the perks of working in a charity shop is getting the first chance at snaffling the juiciest morsels. Of course we don’t get them free. Staff and volunteers get a 20% discount
Now and then we get the occasional item donated that is not suitable to sell such as kitchen knives or clothes that have slight defects that make them unsuitable for sale but too good to toss in the rag recycling.

But there are also other reasons for not putting things out on the shelves and snaffling them for ourselves

Last week a big batch of books came in. A lot of really boring Biblical stuff and a 50 year old set of Encyclopaedia Britannica worthless for anything these days except using the pages for crafts or for lining shelves in an office in order to look impressive and educated at the next Zoom meeting

A lot of the material was of the Norman Vincent Peale Prosperity Gospel variety
God wants you to be rich.
Tithe and Prosper
Health, Wealth and Happiness
Managing God’s Money etc etc

Then there were boxes of books solely devoted to Biblical atlases, histories of Israel, the role of Israel in Christianity, the Big Bang Hoax, the logistics of Noah's Ark etc etc

“Moshe Dayan and the Bible” was one of these little gems. Most of these books were from the 1970s. I was getting a distinct vibe that I was dealing with the possessions of an American style Christian Evangelical. Not any old Evangelical but the variety who believe that the establishment of the State of Israel marks the first steps to the Second Coming of Christ and the End Times
That is when I came across some sad self published little efforts with the intriguing titles “Mystery 666” and “The Great Conspiracy”
It’s not just the Freemasons, Illuminati, Catholic Church and Rothschilds who are in on the Grand Plan but also what was then called The Common Market. All part of the evil scheme for One World Government. So it looks like Bojo and his merry band of Brexiteers were really trying to save Britain from the Evil Octopus of One World Government

These shabbily produced booklets were distributed free at the time but people were asked for a ‘contribution’ of $2 towards printing costs. Back in the 1970 two dollars was a lot of money and could probably buy you a hardback copy of the latest best selling mainstream book

But the best was yet to come. I pulled out a pale blue and very fat tome with the title “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” with the blurb at the bottom of the front cover - “every patriotic American should read this”

Yes. Indeed. This book is the stuff of legend. I had heard all sorts of horror stories but never actually seen a copy of the thing itself. This particular edition was printed in 1934
Needless to say, this is NOT the sort of thing I would ever put out on the shelves. Instead I snaffled it for myself so that it can keep that 1938 edition of Mein Kampf company

Later while on a cafe crawl, I randomly read a page here and a page there. It was not just plain damned nasty but seemed to be the prototype for just about every single one of the other conspiracy theory tomes floating around out there. The rants about communism and Jewish bankers most definitely reminded me of Hitler's tricks of playing both sides of the fence

These days of course, most of the conspiracy stuff is online and with much higher production values than the sad and shabby leaflets that I found at the bottom of the box of books. A clueless newbie could easily be convinced that such crazy fakery is the real deal

Every now and again I catch up on the latest Qanon craziness and cannot help but think that it is just the latest reincarnation of The Protocols with satanic rituals and pedophilia replacing the old Blood Libel. In the old days they used to eat the babies and drink their blood, now it’s sex trafficking and porn movies. I am amazed that no one has bothered with mixing in a bit of organ harvesting.

The tale took a strange twist the following day when it was in the news that one of the guest speakers at the RNC convention- Mary Ann Mendoza was dropped at the very last minute since she had just tweeted a link to a rave review of The Protocols

Apparently the whole Protocols pamphlet was conjured up by some spooks in the Cheka - the great grandfather of the KGB

So what’s old is new again and once again Russia is providing a rich source of conspiracy stuff to keep the citizens of the USA busy. It's like 2016 all over again

All those images of the Great Snake and other monstrous tentacles creatures is certainly keeping this serpent amused. What's old is new again
