Four weeks with the Phoenix
18/07/2003 09:06 pmIt is hard to believe that it is exactly four weeks ago that many of us were drooling and twitching with excitement at the imminent arrival of "The Preciousssss"
Izzie only just managed to finish reading it for the first time about one week ago. Second time round have got as far as the fountain at the Ministry. Today I just happened to be in the very same place I was last time I visited the Ministry..down at the beach. But it was not to be this time for I had come without the bottle of red and cheese picnic and without the Precioussss.
See, today I went out for lunch with the Ma which meant having to look as Durleyish as is possible for me...no green hat and only ONE bag...And the Preciousssss is not exactly the sort of book you can slip in your back pocket.
It was not possible to get home and back to the beach in time for the sunset so I just consoled myself with the thought that I was not completely Potterless...I did in fact have three photocopied pages from book 4 to peruse...and the possibility of teaching an old rat new tricks. But there are certain spells that this treacherous rat is..er not particularly fond of.
The nasty miserable rainy weather we had since 22 June came to a welcome end on Tuesday and sure enough, just like I expected, this Thursday's Wizard's Express had the most exquisitely wonderful weather. Surprizingly, I did not mind as much as I'd expected to. After all, after lounging in the sunshine sipping coffees and paying a second visit to 12 Grimmauld Place, I could then slink down to the train station and watch the steam train return and look at all the cute costumes the kids were wearing. In some ways.. being on a train for two journeys of three hours is almost a waste of a sunny day....but it was annoying missing out on sitting in the sun for a picnic for the two hours we had in 'Diagon Alley' and the dungeons last week.
One of the steam engine drivers let myself and some of the littler kids get on and watch them shovelling coal and stuff. The fact that I had not been on the train that day was no problem at all. In fact, what is really amazing....the engine drivers and the house elves and assorted train staff dressed as wizards or witches are all volunteers!
Maybe Izmeina should apply to offer her services as a Dementor....naaaaa... on second thoughts...kissing little kids yyyyyyyuuuuukkkkk.
Next week at my Friday morning public speaking club we are having a debate. Iz gets to be first speaker on the topic "Technology is Good" Silly subject really. Iz thinks more...it is neutral...It is people who choose to use it for good or evil. Mind you...not so sure if Iz can think of any nice things to say about Nuclear bombs or Sarin gas.
If only the opposition knew that 'Technology is good' Izzie does not have a car, a computer, a phone or even a television....not to mention a microwave....and does not even WANT them...well...except the computer of course.... but then again one of the guys on the opposition is a minion of the evil empire..NNNot Microsoft..the other one. He works as an engineer for a Halliburton subsidiary. (Now did I hear someone say 'Don't mention the war'?) But I suppose that just scores points for HIS argument.
It was nice to be able to catch up on all the sunsets I missed during the weeks of lousy weather and to be able to read my Potters in all the pretty places I had wanted to first time round. Izzie has also discovered a new spot for moon watching. On a hill high above the city and the river facing directly east. Unlike my usual place you cannot see west at all so watching the sunset is out of the question but the big advantage is the bus goes right by this spot and goes straight to where Izzie lurks...or of course right outside the internet cafe three streets down the road.
Now the next thing on the agenda is to practice a bit of Mars spotting.....Not just the centaurs but certain cats have declared that it will be getting brighter in the near future.
Oh and one annoyed Izzie notices that her favorite contact in the National Society for Dolores Adoration and Promotion has disapparated.....leaving no trace at all of his fascinating and enlightening theories concerning this wickedly wonderful woman. Is there a power struggle in the Ministry? Pruffie had also provided most interesting and somewhat similar observations about the use and abuse of power as portrayed in "The Order of the Phoenix" Next time I go putting stuff in LJ memories.....might be safer to cut and paste than to link to fickle creatures like cygnus...something or other.
