The Pommie Plague
02/02/2021 11:14 pmIt's been such a weird week so far
Sunday started a string of 37 Celsius days which sucks when you don't have air conditioning
I decided to leave the Lair to go for a coffee crawl and was quite surprised to find 3 cars parked on the verge next to the bus stop
I assumed someone on the street was having a party
As I got closer to the bus stop, I realized that it wasn't just 3 cars but 10 or more all the way up to the local Hungry Jack's
I then assumed there was a football match at the local oval. But that doesn't seem likely on a hot as hell 37 degree day
It was only when I saw people taking chiller bags out of the car boot that I realized they were just going shopping
It was only then I made the connection to the unexpected announcement on the 11am news that there was going to be a snap lockdown from 6pm that day until 6pm Friday 5th
Apparently a hotel security guard had tested positive for Covid and was suspected to have the more virulent strain from the UK
This was the first case of community transmission in 10 months
So the government decided to go early and go hard instead of just wait and see
So I guess half the city decided to do some last minute shopping. It was the first time ever that the local shopping centre parking was so full that cars were spilling over on to the side streets
When I got to my final destination and noticed the shops there also had s long queue of customers
In contrast, the local cafe was almost empty. I had to make the most of it since all cafes and restaurants would be closed this week
I had originally been wondering where to go today as it's my day off taking into account needing to be in the city for s Fringe festival show at 6.30pm. One of 3 shows I had lined up this week
Of course all Fringe shows have been cancelled this week so I went from too many choices to none at all
So since Sunday I've done not much else than sleeping and watering the weeds
When it's so hot, I simply have no interest in doing much at all
Not even reading or going on the computer especially since it gets so cranky in such hot weather
All the day jobs have been cancelled too. So there's actually no reason to leave the Lair at all
Tomorrow is supposed to be cooler do maybe I will stick my nose out the door and venture down to the shops
While the quarantine hotel had been all over the place while infectious and they've ramped up testing for people who had been in those locations, luckily there's been no more positive cases in the community since
I guess we got too used to our almost normal lifestyle here in the wild west of Oz

Date: 2021-02-02 11:03 pm (UTC)We had an outbreak of hot and sweaty weather last week but this week has been rainy and pleasantly cool. The Sydney Festival went on in January in a cut-down form. Been to see a few films but my life is mostly home-centred as it has been for most of the last 12 months.
