izmeina: (Don't panic)
Izzie manages a quick slink into the downtown netcafe before pottering off to get her nibblies for tomorrow. A certain Taiwanese grocery store which sells kosher 'duck' and 'goosie' for green creatures like the Izzie. They even have 'bacon' and 'ham' but unlike their char siew pork - its' just a bit too fake for this fusssy green serpent.

Got the bottlies for the ma and pa and spent last night mixing up batches of Cockroach Clusters. Troll Boogies, Frog Snots and other delectable chocolate delights.
Tonight will need to put them all in baskets and boxes and make them look all pretty.

The Izzie used to be a right little Stepford Elf who loved cooking and baking. Had lots of gadgets - most of which we got second hand at flea markets and oodles and oodles of recipe books.
Earlier in the week, made some pecan brownies but due to having the princely sum of $2.58 in the bank which had to last until payday on Wednesday, had to resort to replacing butter with coconut oil since we had used all the butter in the batch of shortbreads. Also used plain instead of self raising flour but that would not be a big problem since the brownies would look like panforte instead of brownies.
So they smelled nice and all that but had no idea just how slimy and greasy coconut oil really is. Most overpowering indeed. And flat as a pancake of course.
So that is when the Izzie had the inspired idea of chopping the brownies up in little bits and using them as an ingredient in cockroach clusters instead of slivered almonds. In fact, this year for the first time had to resort to using peanuts instead of almonds because the price of almonds has almost doubled and become a most decadent luxury indeed.

Another problem with most cookies and cake recipes is that they are so over the top with sugar. The Iz had totally forgotten this. In the past, when our skills were not so rusty, was always able to adapt the recipes to reduce sugar or honey without reducing the proportions of dry and liquid ingredients. But Izzie has lost the touch and played safe. So tossing chunks of pecan brownies in chocolate solves this problem too as the chocolate is less sweet than the chunks.

Did the same thing with the batch of White Christmas that had too much rice bubbles and marshmallows and not enough white chocolate. Chopped it in bits, added red and green cherries and stirred it into a pot of melted milk chocolate. Poured a big slab of the stuff and cut it in squares when it set. Much better than the original. Amazing how many mistakes a pot of melted chocolate can transform.

So, tonight will make one last bunch of peanut Cockroach Clusters and wrap the rest of the prezzies. Come to the conclusion, after yet another scrummy lunch at the Juicy Beetroot Cafe, that the Izzie is going to resurrect her interest in whole food cooking and baking. Baking most definitely as whole food recipes seem to be the only ones that do not go overboard on sugar and other forms of sweetness.

Izzie did visit the ma and pa on Thursday and brought along the Precioussss. Yessss. All we did was plug in the big fat blue ethernet cable and wait a minute and we were online. No nasty set ups or nothing. So, will be bringing our Baby over there tomorrow and hope to catch up with all the folks in Cyberia. Izzie has been reading all the posts on her friendses pages but just never has much time online lately than to simply catch up. Adding comments is just a decadent luxury that we never seem to have time for any more.

So, until then - Izzie wishes a happy Christmas, yummy Yule and sizzling solstice for everyone
