izmeina: smiling serpent (zmeya)
Izzie intended to pop into Cyberia for a quick lurk and snoop before catching the bus to the Secret Garden Cafe. But unlike last Sunday when the Izzie was there, today was an icky sticky yuckie cloudy day. All horrid and muggy and not a day to be outside getting fried. So instead, we lurks a bit longer in the netcafe and will potter around the shops until it's time to catch the bus to work

Thursday we pays a visit to the local supermarket. Amidst the half price Christmas tinsel and munchies, or rather near them in the bakery section - on 5th January no less are shelves of Hot Cross Buns. And just when we thought it could not get any worse, up the aisle near all the cheeses are bloody Easter Eggs! Why do they even bother taking down the Christmas stuff the Izzie wonders. Get in early before everyone else.
Well of course - it came as no surprise as it was 2nd January a couple of years back that they had all these Easter things on the shelves. This year was a day later due to the public holiday on Monday.

Is funny, Izzie could certainly not describe herself as a born again Christian by any means but still finds this whole Easter eggs in January thing to be not only ridiculous but quite offensive. Is there nothing sacred or special any more?

Been keeping up with our list of New Year's resolutions to do stuff in the garden and do more cooking and baking and other domesticated activities. Was supposed to plant the lastest Leeaky Hose (it is suppposed to be buried underground to avoid evaporation) on Saturday but it was an ickly pickly 37 celsius so the Izzie just stayed inside and snoozed. Lazy serpent.
Did get to see "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" on Friday which was another scorcher of a day. Something about going to a movie with lots and lots of snow on such a day that was most delightful indeed.
Read these books more than 30 years ago and loved them at the time even while finding most of the story a bit slushy and twee. (The Izzie was able to spot all those Christian references even way back then) Had vague memories of the characters being just too black and white with no shades of grey which is what we find so attractive about the Potter series as well as the fact that it is just so funny too.

Had high hopes for the Great White Witch but was most disappointed indeed. The woman is meant to be a bitch but she is not supposed to look like one ALL the time. Only a twit or a half starved skeleton of a kid would be convinced by her offer of Turkish delight. Izzie could not help but think - they had the trailer for Nanny McPhee and buck teeth moles and all, she was not even half as ugly as the White Witch. She had cool stuff and rather a talent with the freezing charms but the Iz figures that she needs to be more like Dearest Dolores - turning on the charm to convince folks who don't know the truth about her. Actually - that twitchy little mouth was more than reminiscent of Lord Voldemort.

The wardrobe, the faun and the lamp post were wonderful - but we did expect Mr Tumnus to be a little bit hairier - but once the Witch and that Lion appeared on the scene and we had those silly LOTR wannabee battle scenes and the slushy sentimentalism of the stone table, it got all waaaay too much for this cynical serpent. Not a pretty sight to see gold and red flags waving at the best of times. The business with the stone table - no more than the graveyard scene in Goblet - the only bit missing was a certain creature saying "Do this in memory of me" It would have been too offensive in Goblet and too over the top in Narnia.

Such a pity that Aslan did not have a worthy enemy like Sauron. Izzie found herself wanting neither side to win. Was surprised that Peter was not the total prat that we'd expected him to be. Lucy was the best by far. Edmund was just a total twit. All in all, while it was fun - the Iz much prefers the alternative version It too is a wannabee Potter and Lord of the Rings but in the wickedest possible way.
