Now the bid fat Fringe Binge is over, I'm now getting back to my usual routine of lurking around the Lair after work.
Today I was busy watering the weeds and planting some new ones.
Unfortunately my eyes are greener than my fingers and I yielded to temptation in spite of my rule of no new leaf babies in the Lair until after the March equinox.
Of course, the inner lawyer soon found a loop hole and added the word BUY to the beginning of "No new leaf babies" - free weeds rescued from Death Row don't count.
But in spite of such sneakiness I still broke the self imposed rule when I came across some gorgeous wattles (acacia alata & stenoptera) 2 weeks ago and indulged against my better judgement.
In spite of regular watering, a string of >37 Celsius days has left then looking rather crisp and crunchy
It's funny that the Death Row plants are looking much better.
It's funny. It turns out to be a perfect combination.
The Fringe Festival is on at precisely the time that it's too hot to be doing anything in the garden except watering. Planting anything at all is basically an exercise in phytocide.
After 4 weeks of Fringe Bingeing, I actually look forward to getting back to my usual hermit mode.
Like last year, I also went to the open day at the local university. It was a lot more civilized this time without all the COVID restrictions & queues due to QR codes & proof of vaccination being required for entry.
On both occasions I found it all too overwhelming.
I have become quite the hermit serpent.
I'm also thinking of a certain anniversary. Last year, 24th February was on a Thursday.
I bet Putin wasn't expecting his 2 day Blitz Krieg to be still going another 363 days later.
Nearly everyone will remember the first anniversary of Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
I wonder how many will remember the 20th anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq next month.
I suspect Putin was watching very closely & took note of the lack of consequences for George W Bush & his sycophantic minions in Oz and GB.
The same date will be exactly 5 years since my mother died.
With 20/20 hindsight, I'm so glad that I agreed to go to New Zealand with her in February 2003 even though it blew my budget (I cheated and withdrew the funds from my mortgage at the time)
So glad I did. Especially now since she's gone.
Which reminds me, the anniversary of her death is the perfect excuse to plant another tree in her memory.
Especially since the almond tree I planted on the day of her funeral died during the summer of hell last January.

Date: 2023-02-23 08:09 am (UTC)When a copy of Mein Kampf turned up the other day in the donation bin.at the op shop, I suddenly remembered that 31st January this year was the 90th anniversary of him becoming Chancellor of Germany.
I didn't bin it but certainly didn't out it out on the shelves either. It was actually an ex from a secondary school library.
Not sure if it was a big thing in mainland Europe but it certainly passed under the radar here.
24th February 2022 looms large now since it was only last year.
It's 20 years now since 911 and the US invasion of Iraq on 19 March 2003.
A long time especially when a lot of people want us to forget.
I think you are right about the weeds on Death Row. Some were still in their seed tray. They had not even been potted on. But they all had roots 5 times bigger than their little green shoots.
I think they are some sort of eutaxia.
If they'd been in tubestock, their roots would have less room to move and would have turned into a tangled mass.
Small is beautiful in the planting world. The critters adapt so much faster.
I'm so happy that the worst of the summer is over now and I can get back to planting again.
I still haven't chosen a tree yet to plant for Petunia's fifth anniversary.
It has to be something that the black cockatoos like.
I've already got macadamias and banksias so I want something else for them. Probably a silky oak grevillea.
