Pottering and Planting

The planting season has begun and this serpent has not wasted a moment. Resisted the temptation to curl up in the serpent basket until 11 or so. Made a deal with the inner lazy beast that she could do all the snoozing she wanted once the banana tree was planted along with a very large bag of sweet potatoes. The other condition was to snooze in the garden not the basket. Would not have dreamt of doing that even two weeks ago. Would have been pickled within a minute even in the shade
As well as planting, there was watering to be done. Noticed two sets of tiny weeny leaves near the back door. Had assumed that most of the things planted there had been nuked except for the rue and the few remnants of mustard plant. It is an interesting omen that these two little sprouts came from the ginger roots which were planted there on Saturday 31st December. That was the day that Vernon Dursley came lurking and made his nasty petty hissy hate speeches about lazy useless messy Izzie
There is rain forecast for Sunday and Monday so it was just the opportunity to stock up on mustard seeds, coriander and fenugreek. The big kilo bag of black sunflower seeds will finally be laid to rest. Got very adventurous and even bought some pecan nuts and macadamias in their shells. With their origin listed as not Australia but Bayswater and Gin Gin, that is what the serpent calls seriously local. Let’s hope the little critters will feel at home enough in the Lair to seriously consider sprouting
Got six months to make the place drought proof before the onset of the sizzling stinking summer. Since sweet potato plants have a habit of running rampant, here’s hoping they totally take over and provide protection for the soil from sun and wind and a lurking ground for assorted critters.
Even went and dug up a bright yellow spiral notebook to serve as the new garden journal. Abandoned the previous one after the Christmas chainsaw massacre. The old one has a record not just of what got planted and died when and where since April 2007 but also a list at the back of all the plants, seeds, weeds and their assorted mulches and other munchies along with the cost. It would be just too scary to add up but the incriminating evidence remains on paper even if no longer in the land of the living.
