The Presence of the Past
04/04/2018 09:30 pmThe serpent had grand plans for the day.
Being the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, I figured it would be the perfect opportunity to watch the movie “Selma” which I missed the first time around like most movies these days
There have been a few interesting programs on Radio National recently lamenting how mainstream USA culture has turned an unconventional revolutionary with an eye for the big picture into some sentimental slushy Santa Claus.
It’s hardly surprising. The same thing happened to Jesus of Nazareth too. They did a much bigger hatchet job on him. From tossing the money changers out of the temple and resisting the devil’s temptations of limitless food, glory and power to supposedly endorsing a political party full of predators, pedophiles and a money laundering philandering CHEAT with the top job.
By creating the cult of miracles and resurrection, it was a sneaky way of not having to bother with paying attention to the amazing stuff that JC actually said. The stories, snarky comments and parables alone should have been enough to guarantee 'immortality' without any need for all the smells, bells and whistles
Likewise, while Black civil rights was rather nice warm and fuzzy, talk of reparations for slavery and the exploitative nature of the Vietnam war was not a recipe for getting the Mr Nice Award.
But the map is not the territory. It has been a crazy chaotic and emotional week and catching up in Camp Nano Land, watering the weeds and planting an almond tree for Petunia have all inched higher on the serpent To Do list.
But a few Dursley free days might be the perfect opportunity to catch up on things.
I am inviting Dudley and Vernon over for lunch this Friday. Nothing too grand, just cakes, biscuits and some home made sandwiches.
Originally the grand plan was to invite Vernon and Petunia over for the following week for Friday 13th to celebrate exactly 20 years of lurking in the Lair.
That was the plan 3 months ago but the gods giggle when serpents make grand plans.
